A few truths of life I have "discovered", if you will.
Memory erasure and modification? I disagree.
I believe that the erasing and editing of memory is not a benefit to mankind. I think that, if a memory is erased, bad or good, it would give the remaining memories les value than those that have bad memories to make the good ones best. They would be seen only as an event, which is neither bad nor good. If people did not have bad memories, good memories would only be memories. If there were no good memories, the bad ones would also be just that, memories. Not seen as bad or good, just memories. These are my thoughts on the matter.
As with all memories, there are good and bad. If a bad memory--of a death, for example--was to be erased, what would you call a good memory? A birth in the family? So if those were two memories, and one was to be erased what happens to the other? It becomes neutral, at best, and invalid, at worst. When there are only “good” memories, the goodness ceases to exist. In life, if there is no evil, then there cannot be any good to lessen pain of sadness. The same applies to memories.
Another disadvantage of memory erasure is the loss of intelligence. For example, if one had once been taking drugs, and chooses to remove that specific memory, they are in danger of encountering, and eventually using the drugs again. However, if the memory is left untouched, the individual will be able to avoid being under influence of the drug.
Now, tell me what makes a memory good. What makes a memory bad? These two forces endlessly wage war against the other. Why do they fight? This “fight” is the divider between differences. Sun and Moon. Day and Night. Light and Shadow. Good and Evil. All opposites, yet one must have the other to exist. What is the sun without the moon? What is the day without the night? Where is the light without the shadow? What is the good without the evil? I wish of you to think of this, of good and evil, of sun and moon, of opposites.
I leave you with this: If there is no good, then there is also no evil. If there is no sorrow, there is no joy. That is the truth. And that is why I believe that memory erasure is NOT beneficial to the human race.
In all the world, there are more creatures than man the make lifetime matings. Among them, some of the noblest—wolves, swans, geese, the great raptors—all creatures man could do worse than emulate in many, many ways. And withal of them, all, there are those pairings, from time to time, within the same gender. Not often, but not unheard of either. There is in you a fear, a shame, placed there by your own thoughts of one who knew no better. I tell you to think on this: the shay’a’chern pairing occurs in nature. How then ‘unnatural’? Usual, no; and not desirable for the species, else it would die out for lack of offspring. But not unnatural. The beasts of the fields are as innocent as man can never be, who has the knowledge of good and evil and the choice between, and they do not cast out of their ranks the shay’a’chern. There is no shame in loving. Where there is love, the form does not matter, and the gods are pleased. What occurs in nature comes by the hand of nature, and if the gods did not approve, it would not be there. I give you these things as food for your heart and mind.
