My Writing Through The Years
Some people ask, “Why do we have to write?” others ask, “What can I write next?” As for me, I’m one of the people who likes to write…but only if it’s what I want to write about. Sure I’m good at writing, I’m not the best but I’m also not the worst. For me to do well with my writing, I need to be interested for what I’m required to write. For example, my short story Some Hearts Were Meant To Be is an amazing story; well at least, that’s what people say after they get done reading it. Just like my life, I left this story as a cliff-hanger; you don’t know what’s going to happen next. When I was a kid, going through third grade, we’d have this event called Young Authors. I would end up writing about aliens and astronauts having an adventure through space. But I got over that kick and started writing about people with magic powers. Now in high school, I just write romance stories…it’s what I’m best at now. Another example of a piece that I was interested in writing would be Economic Crisis. This piece was written for my personal finance class to inform today’s generation on the problems we’re having in the economy today. To me this was a big issue that was affecting everyone and I was very passionate about it. I really do love writing and over the years I get better and better. But when it comes to writing about another piece, I struggle. A great example would be my piece: Romance: By Claude McKay, a thesis. I have never done a thesis nor have I ever seen one. I like writing poetry but I don’t really care about what it means. So doing this thesis and having to go into a lot of detail was a great challenge for me. Now that I think about it, this thesis is like my life as well. I’ve been through so many challenges in my life, like my father passing away at the age of ten and having to take care of my mom and my sister with no one taking care of me. Or like having to change high schools and having to make new friends and having to get yourself comfortable again. If I were to go back and pull out all of my poetry that I’ve written, I could make a thesis out of them or be able to decipher the poem. The only effect my reading has affected my writing would be that when I read a really good book, I want to make up my own story that has the same theme. As a young child I tended to read more than write; then as I got into middle school and started with portfolios, I found that I enjoyed writing a lot more. When I was in 7th grade we had to write two poems. Our teacher sent in everyone’s poems into the newspaper for a chance to get published, and to my surprise, both of mine got published. I even received a letter from an elderly woman because of it. The letter basically said that she enjoyed my poem and explained to me that she had the name that I wanted to change my name to. I believe that I have progressed as a writer and I know I’ll continue to progress but I’m not planning on making writing a career. My plans consist of going into the army and becoming a FBI agent. But most likely I’ll continue to write in my free time.
