Vain Wishes
I hope that it never happens to you That you stand here right now Wondering how you ever got so very far From where you originally intended to go
I hope that it never happens to you That you stand and look back At your footprints dotting the sand Knowing you meant nothing You made nothing that would stay And feel that sharp bursting pain in your chest Of profound regret
I hope that it never happens to you That each time you stroke your lover’s face It feels like a sin Because you love him so very much That you left your God hanging Wondering when you might come back
I hope that it never happens to you That you realize that your life is nothing But one long fight No matter what you want No matter where you go You have to fight the environment You have to fight all the people You have to fight yourself Just to stay you, just to be happy
I hope that it never happens to you That as you stand and look back And you see all the scuffles fading away in the sand That you wish and long for the peace That is on the stone path nearby That path with a straight rod- That no matter how hard you try to cling to it You can’t seem to get to that path Let alone keep a hold of the straight and narrow You are after all, the root of many evils
I hope it never happens to you That no matter where you would have walked You can only feel the pangs of hatred Toward you and life in general Because you never wanted to make all the difference But you still wanted to matter more than this
What I hope for you Is a clear understanding of what you want And how to get there A life full of real friends And a path worth walking
