Quite some time ago, one-hundred and ninety-eight years, to be exact, a young man and his beautiful wife waited expectantly in their bedroom. The woman had gone through sixteen hours of labor, and was nigh exhausted, but she held tight to her husband's hand as she waited for the midwife to bring in her newborn child. The door creaked open, and the midwife entered, a small bundle in her arms. Her face expressed puzzlement instead of joy as she handed the child to her awaiting mother.
The woman also looked puzzled as she noted the midwife's reaction, taking the little one into her arms. Her eyes widened with shock as she looked to the babe. The tiny girl's flesh was as pale as snow, her eyes a gleaming shade of red. What wisps of baby hair that clung to her tiny scalp were even more pale than her flesh. The odd child was in stark contrast to her tan-skinned, dark haired parents. After the initial shock wore off, the new mother and father decided upon a name for their strange daughter-- Lunari.
Lunari grew up to be quite healthy, despite what her parents had worried was a sign that something was wrong with their little girl. A few months after birth, the child's hair fell out and began to grow in a deep shade of black, much to her mother and father's relief. However, her flesh and eyes remained their respectively unique tones.
Unknown to the young couple, the small child had been picked by the hand of Gaia to be a changer-- a bastet-- a balam. The shapeshifters-- the felines-- the jaguars. Yet this twist was, in turn, twisted around. It seemed that Lunari's father had dark secrets in his past, and was not pure. In order to prolong his life, he had made a pact with something not of this plane. As a result, a demonic essence had been passed down to his child, and perhaps had caused the anomaly in the pigmentation of her body.
Lunari's childhood was quite normal, despite her sensitivity to light and the way she kept to herself in the presence of other children. Nothing traumatic happened in lieu of her unique 'talents,' but tragedy did strike. As she reached the young age of eleven, her parents were both killed in a fire that had consumed the small family's home. Strangely enough, the girl had been sleeping in her bed one moment, and the neighbors reported that she fell out from behind the shadow of a nearby tree. It was assumed that she had been sleepwalking while the inferno raged, but whispers circulated that she hadn't been there seconds before.
After that, Lunari bounced from foster home to foster home, never quite fitting in. When she grew angry, things broke. She was uncooperative, and had seemingly shut down. Finally, the brooding beauty reached the age at which she could strike out on her own. And, gratefully, she did. It wasn't long after that discovered her unique shadowy powers, and after much research, she began to slowly grasp what she was. It was then that she withdrew from the world, and hid herself away for many, many years, developing her newfound skills. Deep within, however, a conflict had begun. It would seem that her original race was battling against the demonic essence that surged through her, resulting in some very unstable behavior.
As she neared her one-hundred and ninety-third year of age, the 'demon' found herself in a very strange yet inviting land. And so, she did what any unaging female of her beauty would-- she went bar-hopping. In doing so, she made many new acquaintances, despite her uncooperative nature. These new people didn't seem to grate her nerves as the humans had, though there were always exceptions.
After a few unsuccessful relationships, and several mishaps, Lunari met a man called Derrin. It would seem that this Derrin had also been transformed into an entity of the demonic nature, though his tenure as such had lasted much, much longer than her own. What had started as a friendship blossomed into romance, and soon the girl found herself in love. The first time they were intimate, the demon's grasp on her faded. The bastet in her began to stir. Derrin's physical body was given up in order to expel the demonic half that threatened himself and his new lover, and soon took on the form of a were-serpent, a nagah. It was then that her body began to double its efforts in rejecting the unnatural form forced upon it. One night, in the heat of passion, a child was concieved-- twins, in fact. And at that very moment, the impurity was purged from within her and her true form, that of a balam, emerged. It would be a month and a half later that she realized she wasn't simply late, and ill.. she was pregnant.
The months rolled by as she learned of her true prowess, and her stomach grew in size. She and Derrin were married in a private ceremony that, to this day, neither will discuss in detail. Soon after, a boy and a girl, Apophis and Sekhmet, were born. Apophis had taken on his father's new chosen form, that of a nagah. Sekhmet followed her mother's lineage, and became a bastet. As the children grew, freakish occurences happened less and less often. Well.. aside from Lunari's "fits." But that's another story altogether.
