Chapter 1 How it all started
Hi, my name is Ashley Miner. I live in London, at an orphanage with a bunch of other kids that I consider my family, and friends. Since I have no family, I have to live here. Don’t get me wrong this place is fabulous, if you look on the bright side that is. Most of the people here are just wonderful human beings, but not everyone here is, how you say, happy-go-lucky. I try to be nice to everyone as much as possible, and I do my best to stay out of trouble. All I want to do is to enjoy my life as much as possible, and not worry about the past or future. I just smile at everyone and pass off and negative attitudes, especially from Tina. Tina Kindle is not one of the nicer kinds of girl. She is a bit to, I don’t know, spoiled for my liking. She and Ms. Timberline are a bit rude and kind of snooty to everyone. I could see them being relatives or something. I think that they are really nice at heart though, just have some rough edges to be smoothed down. Ms. Timberline is the Owner of the orphanage that I live in. She doesn’t like children every much, so I find it to be weird how she has an orphanage. I guess that’s none of my business though. Enough of the not so nice people at the orphanage, there are plenty of others that are fantastic. Just like Ms. Drimply, she is the care-taker that is as sweat as apple pie. She was the one that took me off the streets and brought me to this lovely home. Then there’s my best friend in the whole wide world, Melissa Judy. She and I are like sisters, we are the same age, 14 years old, and we share almost everything and even share the same room. How great is that? But I can’t forget about Dianna Hinkle! She is 12 years old and so creative, and special to me. She made every girl a pretty charm bracelet and said that every bracelet was made special for each girl. She is very kind and humble. Then there’s Ivory Roselyn who is 10 years old. She is remarkably shy and scared. Poor girl doesn’t like to leave her room and doesn’t like to talk to the other boys or girls. She sometimes talks to me on a good day, but she mostly talks to her teddy. She stays in the corner of her room all day, everyday and just watches everyone else play and have fun. That’s just all the girls though there are boys too. Like Daniel Glubic, he is 15 years old, and is always really serious also doesn’t have fun too often. I think it’s because he is the oldest so he thinks he has to watch over everyone to make sure they don’t get into trouble. At least he is really nice to everyone and does smile a lot. He’s a mystery to me, and I think to everyone really. Then there’s Justin Morris, he’s 10 years old, and really fun to play base-ball with. Base-ball is favourite sport, and always wears his lucky base-ball cap. Whenever he catches the ball he makes these funny little comments like “and the crowd goes wild, what a great catch by The Justinator.” Then there’s Marc Duttonham, a 13 year old boy who loves to read. He has read the books in our library about a thousand times already and I don’t understand why. They are boring old books, that are just research and junk like that. But whatever makes him happy is great to me. Last but not least, Paul Franklin. He is 14, like Melissa and I, and he loves romantic stuff. He acts real cool with all the girls he meets and is flirty. I think that Melissa has a crush on him, but you know nothing form me. We all live in the place we call home, but mostly known as, the “outcast’s home.” We ignore the names that the other kids say, if they really knew us then we would all be friends. That’s what I always tell everyone when they call us names. We have our lives hard enough as it is. With the wicked old Ms. Timberline, and her precious Tina, we don’t need others bothering us, just because we don’t have real families like them. Though I try and shrug off the names and teasing, it still hurts a lot, and sometimes I cry, but never around anyone. I feel like I have to stay strong for everyone, like I’m their support. Me and Danny work as a team to keep everyone well and happy, well when Ms. Drimply isn’t around. I always try and look on the bright side of things. Like if we weren’t all here at this house then we would be on the streets, hungry, and homeless. So I am grateful that I’m at this orphanage and try to help everyone else see the bright side of their problems.
