First entry of the new year! Better make it good. Where was I? ... Oh yes, I had just rescued those two eels from the ocean floor.
After providing basic care for their wounds (All sea-witches should have at least Novice level training in first-aid.), I performed a secondary assessment of the two of them. I thought they looked familiar. I had seen them most recently in the stage show I went to see in New York City before I had joined the Gaia community.
'Are they still in costume?' I wondered. To test my theory, I pulled lightly against the arm scales of the fair-skinned eel. He winced in pain and groaned. Apparently, they were true, bonafide eels.
(How it was they were able to breathe on land and underwater I don't know and maybe never shall, but it sure is handy. Also, I still think it's quite peculiar that they look fairly human.)
The dark-skinned eel's breathing was not traceable, but since he was badly bruised I didn't want to risk further injury. I performed a spell that would allow me to see inside his body and put my hand over his ribcage. A vertabrae had dislodged from his spine and was causing an airway obstruction.
Providing back blows would probably make the vertabrae go deeper, but I couldn't give chest thrusts either. I was at a loss; there was nothing I could do. Suddenly, I felt something brush my back. It was the fair-skinned eel's left hand. (I had laid them on two separate slabs of marble on the shore part of my grotto in order to prevent disease transmission and shark-attacks.) 'Can he help me?' I wondered.
"What is it?" I asked my patient. "Can you do something to help your friend there?"
"Not much, considering the state I'm in", he replied meekly. He sat up, cradling his right arm against his chest as he said, "However, you may be able to."
"How? One of his thoracic vertabrae is lodged inside in his windpipe preventing flow of oxygen. Normally I would provide the care I would administer for an unconscious choking victim, but I fear risking further injury by providing back blows or chest thrusts."
"You're a sea-witch right? Just pop the bone back in place with your magic."
Did I detect a hint of sarcasm in his voice? There was no time for retaliation though. I had to save his friend's life. Using the see-through spell again, I located the windpipe and the airway obstruction.
"Now, use a levitation spell and move the bone back into place, but be careful." (Yeah, like I wasn't a bundle of nerves already. xp )
I had my doubts about this guy. What if he just wanted to make it so his companion would die and then when he was better he could pin all the blame on me? Still, I couldn't refuse; I didn't want the dark-skinned eel to choke on his own vertabrae.
I performed the spell, but it took some doing. I had to combine it with a reaching spell in order to get inside his body and then I had to guide it to the the correct location. Thankfully though, it went off without a hitch once I got there.
"Not bad, for a newbie," said the fair-skinned eel.
Seeing as his companion was breathing smoothly now, I turned to him. "Like you're one to talk," I retorted. "You know eels can't do magic, so you took advantage of my powers and made me do that."
"Hey, show some respect. You were going to crumple into a ball on the floor and sob, and left poor Jetsam to die, if I hadn't helped you."
"That's not true!"
"Say what you want. Deep down, I know that you know that you needed me."
I hated to admit it but he was right, but I would deal with that later. I left my grotto for more medical supplies, but just to be sure he wouldn't cause trouble while I was gone, I gave him some pain-killer medicine with sleeping draught in it before I left. I would deal with him later. Right now, I needed to find Melissa and quick.
