Maledicte
I have been hypnotized by Maledicte. This is everything I wanted out of Swordspoint and Privilege of the Sword. I know its a different author, but the feel is like a darker cousin of those two. It is a similar world, with different politics, but the same sort of noble maneuvering. I found myself genuinely liking a number of secondary characters. The writing is clever enough to pull the reader in and out of sympathy with one or two of the main characters, which gives an interesting perspective. One sees the horror of the actions, while still sympathizing with what motivates them, which is a little horrifying in itself. I love the blythe bisexuality. I love the use of pronouns to emphasize identity. I'm wildly happy with this and hope the last third lives up to the extremely high quality of what I've read so far.
