Today I came across a thread on the CS discussion forum at my uni.
Basically, the original poster was criticizing that his introductory CS class put everyone under an insane amount of pressure and that we'd all end up nervous wrecks from all the pressure to accomplish - also, that the pace in the class was supposedly way too fast. (It's blindingly slow but yeah.)
Granted, since they introduced the new study programs in Germany, the bachelor students are under a lot more pressure than the Diplom students (I'm still on a Diplom program, yay), and they have much less freedom to take classes outside their degree - but that is hardly the professor's fault, who was blamed in the thread.
And what do these people want? Being spoon-fed pre-chewed knowledge?
They complain about having to self-teach stuff that isn't explained ad nauseam. Seriously, do you think it'll be any different after uni? They'll have to self-teach stuff without getting exercises and tutorials from others all the time. They'll have to cope with pressure, where screwing up doesn't only mean retaking the class but may mean suddenly finding oneself collecting unemployment. What will they do if suddenly there is no one to hold their hand while learning anymore?
They should go re-learn their Latin. "Study" comes from "studere", which means, among others, "making an effort".
I feel so incredibly old when I ask myself what the heck is going on with our youth, even if they graduated highschool maybe two years after I did.
