As I sat down on the park bench, I looked back at the group of people I had just left. They continued to move along at a quick pace, pushing and shoving each other forward; like a school of little silver fish moving along in the stream of life. People were moving to and from work, and a group of schoolgirls on holiday were out shopping for clothing. There was the occasional pickpocket hobo, out looking for an unwary victim who would not notice if their wallet went missing. It was a normal sight for any Saturday morning.
People-watching is a hobby of mine; much like how some people enjoy reading or sports or playing video games. People fascinate me. How people could be so different, no two ever the same, but how they could be so alike at the same time. You could take someone right off of the street, talk with them for five minutes, and in those five minutes, discover a whole world of things you never would have dreamed of. People could learn so much from each other, if they ever took the time to do it.
I watched as an elderly gentleman and his granddaughter passed by me and sat down on one of the benches not too far from mine, the granddaughter helping the ill old man sit down with ease, and something caught my eye. It was nothing more than a flash of a shadow, moving too quickly for me to get a proper look. Jerking my head in the direction I had seen it run, I scanned the crowd with my eyes. A man wearing a brown trenchcoat and carring a briefcase hurried past, two women pushing prams and chatting casually crossed the street, a young couple and their little girl were taking their orders... nothing out of the ordinary. Sighing, I moved my gaze ahead of me again. Just when I had thought I had seen something interesting...
And then I saw it.
It sat on Its haunches in the middle of the street, staring at me. Car passed over It, or through It (I could not tell), but It was not fazed. It continued to stare at me with tunnel-like onyx eyes, and I was trapped in Its gaze. I could not tear my eyes away, no matter how hard I tried. It continued to stare at me, searching and looking deep into my soul, looking for Its answer.
The noises of the people grew ever distant; muffled buzzing that had become but a distraction in the back of my mind. Time moved slowly to a stop, the people freezing in their tracks. The noises had dissovled into nothing. It was as if we were the only ones that existed. Me and It.
I was falling into a deep, black abyss as darkness began to envelop me. The shadows of the people streached and morphed into grotesque figures as they reached into the four corners of the world, wrapping everything into a shadowy blanket. Thoughts came unbidden into my mind; the dark whispers of demons that hid in the dark.
But the loudest voice of all was the voice of It. And although I could not understand what It was saying, in my heart I knew what It meant.
I had been chosen. It had come to this world searching for someone, and It had chosen me. Millions of people around the world to choose from, and I was the one who It had chosen. I was going to recieve Its power, so I could help It with Its goal.
The lives of the people of the outside world seemed so insignificant to me now. If they had mattered once, they did not matter now. They were cattle, cattle for the slaughter; the little idiot people with their idiot lives. Idiot people who felt anger and worry and joy and love. Those feelings only served to make them more pathetic in my eyes. Stupid people who thought that they were the only beings that mattered in the eyes of the Universe. But It was the Universe, and they didn't knw that.
Fools, they were all fools.
That was why It had chosen me, I knew. It had seen what fools the others were, and It had seen what I knew, and It had chosen me. I would receive Its power, so I could make those judgements upon others. I would have the power of It, and then the humans would be sorry. They would be forced to bow down and obey my wishes, obey Its wishes, if they were to live. Pitiful, pathetic, human slaves.
The darkness seemed to grow even darker, if possible. Its eyes glowed eerily black against the shadows; the only part of It that I could see now. I knew I was about to receive Its power of the Universe. I would be as powerful as It. Powerful enough to stop the flow of time, to control the Universes with ease, and I would have an even greater power behind me. Foolish humans; how they would pay.
The blackness grew, and Its onyx eyes glowed brightly and darkly, enough to rival the sun. Its eyes grew brighter and darker than anything before; power radiated from every corner of every shadow. Brighter and brighter, and the darkness swelled.....
And then It was gone.
