It had been years since They had spoken to him. He thought They had forgotten him entirely. He could only faintly remember those nights when he had heard Them. Hushed whispers and scattered cries. That's all They were now, not the stories They had told him, or the families They had once lived with and had left behind. They were just faded wisps now, so transparent in Nat's memory.
But as Nat surveyed the capacious cavern, he could see them once again. They filled the room in the hundreds, wisps of pallid energy, blanketing the room like a fog. He could hear them speaking to him beneath the overlay of the sounds of the living. With each passing moment, Nat felt himself tiring with the ache of a thousand past lifetimes. None of them were his, yet he felt them nonetheless.
