Crusader, by Edward Bloor:
I was not impressed at first, but a friend assured be this was good, so I persevered. Boy, am I glad I did. This surprisingly complex novel addresses any number of topics, including race and racism, politics, the media, society, labeling, as well as having some seriously interesting characters. It is technically speculative fiction, but the only element that marks it so soon becomes so commonplace one forgets that this is technically near future. Yes, I solved the mysteries before the characters did, but considering the view point character is a very clever teenaged girl who does solve so many things, no way am I holding that against this book.
