Sam sat at her desk, working on her homework, head bobbing in time with the music playing on her iPod. Faintly she heard the sound of tapping on her door. She glanced up, irritated. Couldn’t they read the DO NOT DISTURB sign on her door?, she thought angrily. “Come back later!” she called; hoping whoever it was would leave. The tapping ceased and she snorted spitefully, “Stupid people,” she muttered, turning back to the papers, already lost in the calculations and music.
5 minutes passed and she frowned, the tapping had started again, she turned to towards the door to yell at the idiot, and froze. The tapping was coming from her window, her 5th floor window. Slowly she turned, her eyes wide and heart racing. She felt a scream rise in the back of her throat, building, building. She faced the window, her whole body quivering in scared anticipation… Nothing was there. “Tap taptap,” she spun towards the bed, nothing. “Taptaptaptap,” she twisted wildly, flailing arms knocking over her lamp, sending it crashing to the ground, splinters of glass flying, nicking her legs. “Tap taptap TAP TAPTAPTAP TAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAP!” the sound swirled around the room, pressing, pushing, her whole body vibrating. She whirled around and the scream that had built inside her exploded, ripping itself from her chest. Dimly some part of her mind realized that the tapping had stopped, but she couldn’t act on it, couldn’t move, couldn’t look away from the glowing, red, eyes…
