So, this is my try at a sonnet.... we had to write one for Writer's Craft and the subject had to be something that haunts you/bothers me, so....
Child abuse bothers me.
A child plays; bright eyes and white teeth shown off by big, goofy, grins,
Tinkling laughter echoes when she wins,
Soaring higher on the swings; head thrown back, hair flying in the wind, hands gripping tighter on the rope.
Reddened skin; blue and black and yellowed flesh; broken bones help that child to give up hope,
Fear coursing through tiny little veins when she approaches ''home'', heart palpitating,
Scars, visible or otherwise, never go away; are never-ending.
That fear develops, spreads to all figures of authority,
Trust becomes nonexistent, she's weary; angry;
She can't look up to these people who never bear the consequences of their own actions.
Safety is a thought of the past, you can tell by her reactions;
By the way her bedroom is a refuge, and the way she never comes out.
Looking back, not wanting to remember.. She’d rather do without.
I see that child, that girl, that little boy, I see them cry for help for so long
While everyone sits around, pretending happily that nothing is wrong.

And that, my friends, is my sad attempt at poetry.
