Ch. 4 Excerpt
Chapter 4 Syle

I shivered as I leaned against the cold, wet cement wall of the alley, watching impatiently as Violet decided to chitchat in the pouring rain with a blind man she nearly stepped on while she was dancing. She was really starting to scare me now. Her mood seemed to transform successively, which made it difficult to tell when she was in a good mood or not. In fact, this was the only time that she seemed happy. Dancing and prancing around like that, getting thoroughly soaked…

Then the stranger began walking towards me. I instinctively shrunk back against the wall, trying not to get in his way as he strode with incredible ease through the narrow path. Just as he passed, though, he lifted a hand. Soft, warm fingers lightly grazed my elbow. He stopped and gracefully pivoted on his heel to face me, smiling friendly.

I held my breath, amazed at the handsome creature standing before me. He smiled, held out a hand and spoke in a rich accent I could not identify, “Lucifer, the blind artist. Pleasure to meet you.” I stared down at his hand, unable to bring myself to take it.

He cocked his head, almost as if he were examining me… I looked closely at the black fabric of the blindfold he wore, trying to figure out if he was really blind. He sure didn’t act that way. But then again, he might have been an expert at finding his way around without his sight. I timidly grasped his warm, supple hand, and he shook it gently.

“Ah…there we are. I knew I was not speaking to a concrete wall,” He rubbed his clean shaven chin with one hand, the other still clasped around mine.

I glanced up to see Violet watching me, her face void of emotion. I felt a prickle of unease. Young girls were not supposed to speak to strangers, but Lucifer acted like a perfect gentleman. He didn’t look like a drunken bum or a drug dealer, at least.

His soft voice broke through my thoughts, “What is your name?”
“Syle,” I answered softly.
“Syle, another fine name. How fortunate of me to run into two beautiful ladies in one day!” He bowed, finally releasing my hand. I clutched my cold fingers.

He ruffled his messy black hair and adjusted his blindfold. I watched, unwilling to say goodbye. I decided to stall awhile longer, even though I was sure Violet wouldn’t appreciate it.

“I loved your drawings on the sidewalk,” I murmured.
“Thank you, Syle,” He flashed his white teeth in a huge grin, “Art is my passion.”
“They were amazing,” I prodded, “How did you-?” I stopped myself, not wanting to offend.
Lucifer smiled again and muttered, “There other ways to see.”

He bid goodbye and left, his steps echoing off the alley walls. I watched him disappear around the corner.

Something leapt inside, and I quivered as I hurried over to Violet. She held out her jacket to me, and I threw it on gratefully. Her clothes and hair were completely soaked. I headed for the dormitory, and for once Violet was following me.
