If you all recall, I was working on a random short story. Yeah...it ain't short anymore. I posted the first part awhile ago. Now I'm posting the second part in chapters because they are being redone and getting longer. I'll soon be working on the first part again to revamp it. So enjoy!
Companions of the Sword part 2 A Second Chance
Chapter 1 The scent of blood drifted along with the wisps of the wind. Total carnage covered a deserted battleground, the aftermath of a great battle. The carrion crows feasted off the dead corpses of so many different races of creatures. Only one lone solider walked these grounds. Her cape billowed behind her in the wind as she slowly walked through the corpses. She wore a blood red and black riding outfit with accents of armor on her forearms. Her knee high black boots, which were made of tough, thick leather, covered the parts of her legs that would have needed more armor. The piercing look of her deep red eyes followed the crows as they darted through the sky and down to their feast. Half of the men here were her comrades, her fellow kinsmen. The wind lightly tossed her jet-black hair across her face, covering the red five-pointed star on her forehead. The fading light glinted off the strands of her hair that were silver. She lifted a pale hand to her face and brushed the hair away with the tip of her nail. "A pitiful battle over something so small..." Her voice carried a soft melody of an accent, like ice and romance at once. A coy smirk crossed her pale face. A single crow with a single eye landed on a ripped and broken flagpole in front of her. In its mouth hung an amulet. The flutter of its wings drew her attention from her thoughts. "If only Allestar gave that to me when I asked him for it. He might still be alive right now. Oh well. His loss, not mine." She took the amulet from the bird's beak and stroked its ebony feathers once before it flew away. She removed a black velvet pouch from her belt and placed the amulet inside it for safekeeping. A soft chuckle parted her lips as she began to walk away. Suddenly, a voice reached her sensitive ears, stopping her dead in her tracks. "I see you managed to kill an entire army again, Shana Dragonfire." Shana turned to face this sudden new comer. There standing in front of her, was a half demon she knew all too well. The girl was slightly shorter then her and had long, wild, dark brown hair. Her eyes were large, like dark brown pools. Her skin was an even shade of olive, much more alive looking then Shana's death white skin. The girl's outfit was simple, a knee length kimono decorated in flames. Shana thought she was bare footed at first, but as her eyes fell to the ground, she saw the girl had on black, ankle high, leather boots. "Long time no see, Nira. I thought you were dead." The tone in her voice was monotonous. Nira only laughed in response. "Me? Dead? You have got to be kidding me?" She hesitated a moment. A look of confusion began to spread over her face. "Something is different about you. I know I haven't seen you in five years, but this is a big difference." Nira looked her friend over from head to toe, trying to find the answer. Shana chuckled darkly. The air around them grew colder, making Nira shudder. "Nira, Nira, Nira. And you were believed to see a person's aura?" A swirling mass of black, raging flames surrounded Shana. Nira jumped back a bit, thinking the flames to be real. But then she noticed what they really were. With a wave of Shana's hand, the flames were gone. It was nothing but her aura. "There was hint number one for you. Here is hint number two. What is the natural color of my eyes?" Nira's gaze panned up to Shana's eyes. Her own eyes widened when the thought finally clicked in her mind. "I can see auras, Shana. Do not take me for a fool. You are a shield. You hid your aura from me. Though I am surprised I didn't feel how dark it was. That was enough proof to show me what you really are. I now know what is so different about you. You've lost it again. You're evil." Her voice trailed off with a lingering sadness. Shana laughed as she clapped mockingly. "Oh so true, my kitty half demon of a friend." Large black shadows began to form behind Shana's back. Nira stood guard. Who knows what Shana was trying to pull? Just then, large black and silver dragon wings unfurled from Shana's back. "I'd love to stay and chat, but there are more important things to take care of then talking to you. Farewell!" She then leapt into the air and began flying towards the south. Nira just stood there, struck with shock and grief. "I thought it would never happen again. She promised it wouldn't. She said she would never break any of her promises. Why now? Why has she done this?" Nira bowed her head as she walked off the battlefield. She stopped as she reached the edge of a vast forest. She snapped her fingers once, causing all the bodies on the field to burst into flames. She watched the glow of the fire as the smell of rotting flesh and smoke tickled her sensitive nose. With a quick nod of satisfaction, she headed into the dark forest, a sad smile on her lips.
