I see you, as you approach me.
What’s this… what’s this?
A flutter of fleeting wings… within me?
Is this how the phrase “butterflies” was coined?
…Preposterous! I feel NO such things!
A mere moment of queasiness!
It must be my lunch… settling within me wrong!
And then you open your mouth.
What’s this… what’s this?
My eyes, how do they stray not from your face?
Why do I have this sudden urge…?
…No, no! I cannot think such IMMORAL things!
Something possesses me to do so… that’s right!
Some stronger, divine being must be toying with my mind!
Words flow out.
What’s this… what’s this?
I’m nearly sighing in relief?
Is it because my trance is broken, or because of your sweet, sweet voice…?
…Bah! Such PETTY thoughts!
It was a temporary lapse of lung power, is all!
That’s right! A slight, natural occurrence affecting my breathing patterns!
Your words fall on deaf ears.
What’s this… what’s this?
Am I so far gone that I had forgotten to listen?
Had your words just passed me by so completely, leaving only your voice?
…Impossible! My SUPERIOR mind is not so feeble!
Your words were simply wasteful to my intellect!
They were not needed for any future reference of mine! Inconsequential!
Your eyes glow happily.
What’s this… what’s this?
Since when do I know the colour and detail of your irises?
Has your gaze always been so enrapturing?
…To hell! My mind has CLEARLY temporarily gone rancid!
A momentary lapse in brainpower, if you will!
It was simply a trick of the light, making your eyes so striking, so bright!
You smile.
What’s this, what’s this?
This feeling… what is this?
Am I really failing to place these new afflictions?
…It is not so! There cannot BE afflictions!
I’m a crazed, feeble, superior creature! Incapable of emotion!
Insanity, that must be it! Insanity, I knew it! I knew it all along!
You turn to leave.
What’s this… what’s this?
This feeling… what is this?
… I… I desist, I desist! I DESIST!
My problem all along…! I have solved!
Denial, DENIAL!
I wrote this poem quite a while back, on the topic of emotions. I actually quite like it, and I think it's one of my best. I like the strange sense of humor I have embedded in it.
