Trek's Musings about the world.
I sold all my remaining Cash Shop items in my store overnight, so I went out and bought myself a Performance Rod Plus. Just to test it, I fished ten buckets at Durem with it. I didn't think the slightly wider lines and widened top and bottom made much of a difference at first - that is, until I switched back to the Basic Rod. Wow. A difference it made.

Anyways, I decided to find out how much fishing it would take me to offset the cost of the rod, to see if the purchase was worthwhile. Here's what I caught in my first 10 buckets with the rod using my usual Grade D bait:

31 white feeder - 10g - 310g
39 brown feeder - 10g - 390g
44 black feeder - 10g - 440g

7 bluestone biter - 25g - 175g
9 black roque biter - 25g - 225g
2 pyrite biter - 25g - 50g

2 sand boldur - 50g - 100g
1 slate boldur - 50g - 50g

14 cans - 5g each - 70g
19 boots - 2g each - 38g
12 tires - 3g each - 36g

total value of fish - 1884g
total buckets - 10
total cost of bait (D) - 1000g
total profit - 884g
profit per bucket - 88.4g

It took me roughly an hour to do these ten buckets w/ frequent breaks, since my arm kept getting tired. 884g per hour is pretty tough to match by any other means, except by buying and selling in the MP, which I don't have the guts to do much of yet.

Of course, this doesn't take into account the cost of the rod, which I paid 11,950g for. I already made 4192g from the Bassken and Gambino fish I sold to Ronek yesterday. I don't remember how much trash I collected from those buckets (since I gave away some of it already, and I collected some from Towns), or the value and cost of bait I used (a combination of F and D) so I can't take the value of those into account. Let's assume that it cost 1500 gold for all that bait. So how much Durem fishing do I have to do yet to make up the cost of the rod?

Just for kicks, let's throw in the value of the Durem fish I caught with my Basic Rod that I haven't sold yet (again not accounting for the cost of the bait used to catch those fish) and the value of the trash I've also collected during those fishing sessions (some trash was collected from towns, but only a tiny amount). I won't show the math I used to come up with these values, but they're assuming the same rate as shown above.

Assets

4192g Bassken/Gambino fish (not including trash)
1884g Durem fish (caught today)(including trash)
1445g Durem fish (existing)(not including trash)
2096g trash(all 3 lakes + towns)

Total assets - 9617g

Expenses

1000g D bait
1500g D and F bait
11,950g rod

Total expenses - 14,450g

Total profit so far: 9617g - 14,450g - -4833g

So it seems that so far, I've taken a loss of 4833 gold. Assuming I fish only at Durem, and my rate of 88g profit per bucket continues, then it'll take 55 buckets with grade D bait to make up the rest of the cost. I'll probably fish 5 buckets a day at most (since I'm kinda tied up in a video game right now, but that's for another day mrgreen ), so it'll take me a minimum of 11 more days to make up that expense. Considering how much easier it is to fish with this rod - something I can't easily measure - I say that over the long haul it's a worthwhile investment.

Feel free to point out any flaws in my logic. stare

I buy F bait on the MP for 1-10g each (I have over 100 of these cheap F baits), and I think that F bait is a much better investment than the D bait.

Assume I catch with F bait 18 pebbos in a bucket, nothing special. Sold for 11g each, I make 198g. Minus the expense of bait, and it's about 190g profit.

Let's compare with a D bait bucket where you catch 12 pebbos, 5 biters, and 1 boldur (pretty nice bucket). pebbos @ 11g each = 132 gold, 5 biters @ 25g each = 120g, and a boldur for 50g more. This looks like a good bucket at first glance, but it is only 270 gold... and minus the 100g for bait expenses, you've only made 170g with this great bucket as opposed to the 190g that I made with F bait and a bucket that's far from spectacular. So unless you start catching a lot of biters and boldurs in your buckets, I think F is the best choice.

And dont even get me started on A bait x_x

I'm aware that using grade D kills most of my profits. But one can't catch rares with F bait, and I don't want to kill off any potential rares that I may catch, so I always use D. I probably should have mentioned that. razz

I read one analysis that concluded that the best way to maximize profits per bucket was to use grade D for the first five or so buckets (when the large fish are biting the most), then switch to grade F afterwards.

And I'll agree that A bait is a waste as far as fishing for profit goes. I'd only use it if I were competing with someone in a tournament or something like that.
