A small boy with dark red hair stood crying. A woman, who could only have been his mother, knelt next to him, trying to console him.
“Shh, shh,” she whispered to him, “It’s okay, everything’s alright, Drakeal.”
But everything was not alright. For Drakeal was not an ordinary boy. He was, in fact, a Dragon. His small, bat-like Dragon Wings fluttered uselessly against his back, the tip of his tail tapping the floor.
“Wh-Why do they keep picking on me?!” Drakeal cried, wrapping his small arms around his mother’s neck.
“Because… you’re different.” his mother said, “They don’t understand so they pick on you.” Drakeal sniffed once and stopped crying. “That’s my boy.” She added, stroking his nose with the tip of her finger. Drakeal giggled and smiled.
There was a loud crash. A man burst into the room, his eyes wide with panic. “They’re here!!” he cried.
“Drakeal!” his mother said, “You’ve got to hide!” She removed a board to reveal an opening and almost shoved Drakeal inside before replacing the board. “Stay in here.” she instructed. Stomping drew closer, coming up the stairs.
“Alright!” a man demanded, “Where is he?!!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Drakeal’s mother said.
“Shut up!!” the man said, hitting her across the head with his gun, “I know he’s here!!” There was a thud as Drakeal’s mother hit the ground.
Drakeal wanted to help her, but he was too scared. Tears streamed down his cheeks.
His mother got up. “Well he isn’t here.” she said.
“Then,” the man said, there was a click, “You are of no use to him…” There was a bang, followed by another, final thud. The man’s footsteps grew more distant as he walked out.
Drakeal waited until he could no longer hear the footsteps before he got out.
“Mama?” he said. No response. He saw her lying on the floor. “Mama??” His voice trembled. He walked up to her, his hands drawn close to his body, scared. He was crying again. “Mama,” he cried, when he saw the hole in her chest, right over her heart. “Don’t go. Please, don’t go.” He shook her as best as his weak arms could manage, trying to wake her up, “Don’t leave me…” She slumped towards him, her lifeless, deep blue eyes staring blankly at him.
Drakeal fell over his mother, crying into her chest, with no end in sight. He was alone, and there was no one coming to save him from his pain.
