Dragon Holder
By: Tiffany Larsen
It was late spring, only it felt more like late summer, the heat was excruciating.
The towns’ folk of Sunraiders dropped like flies in the heat from being out in the sun to long, to some people it was a good year for business. Every year a caravan of traders would settle in the large town to trade, sell, or just buy goods. This year they had special items for this particular weather. They had everything from hand crafted cloth fans to the freshest Spring Mountain water. But they had a bit of trouble as well for the rich were to stuck up to buy any of these “simple things”, No their money went to the high arch wizards of Sunraiders. Who for a “small” price of gold would use magicks to cool a house to just the right temperature or cure only the most “worthy” of people.
As the lively streets filled up with eager buyers and wandering childern, two boys could be seen running through the twisting streets.
One of them was small and shaggy looking with long blonde hair tied in to a ponytail and tan skin patched with black from dirt and mud. His clothes ragged and filthy, and in his hands was a short sword and his blue eyes seemed to show that he was determined to get away from the other boy.
The boy who was chasing the first was taller then him, he had brown hair, and tanner skin then any other towns’ folk. He had his green eyes fixed upon the sword and the boy as he chased him. His slightly baggy clothes brushing against people and objects he passed as he ran.
“Shane! This isn’t funny…give back my sword!” yelled the older boy.
Shane hesitated for a minute or two before dashing up a narrow ally way towards a less crowded street only to run in to a guard at the other end.
“Well, well me boy what Ye got there now lad?” said the guard with a slight grin
“C-captain Kreen…I-I don’t know what you’re talking about I got nothin’ you want,” said Shane hiding the sword behind his back.
Soon the other boy showed up and grabbed the sword.
“Gah! N-Noka let go it’s mine I found it!”
“Yeah in my hands, now…give…it…back,” said Noka clenching his teeth as he slowly pulled the sword from Shane’s tight grasp.
“Aye! Now we don’t need any fightin’ here, lads” said Kreen “Shane me lad I’ll only say this once, and once alone.” He gave Shane a slight frown, either ye hand that sword there back to Noka, or I be telling your mum what ye be doin’. Ye hear me lad?”
Shane’s grasp loosened as Noka pulled the sword out of his grasp.
“Now that’s a good lad, now what do you Say to Noka now?” said Kreen raising an eyebrow
“I-I’m sorry Noka, I won’t take it again…I swear it on my father’s grave” said Shane bowing his head sadly.
“Captain Kreen I’m sure he was just playing…you don’t have to tell his mother about it” Said Noka looking at Shane with saddened eyes. For he remembered the day when Some of the men in the town had to leave for the war of Simaron when he was ten for a battle against leaders to decide who should rule all of Simaron.
There were two men who lead this battle, King Jarren and King Tarn.
King Jarren was the former leader of Sunraiders, he was a kind king who thought of nothing but to help and protect his people. Some say he had a son who’s mother died while giving birth to his son and that he should have been king but that theory was erased when King Tarn came in to rule.
King Tarn was a greedy king though only a few of the town’s people realized that. When the war was started King Tarn arranged an attack on Sunraiders nearly ten years back. King Jarren not wanting to give up his beloved Kingdom gathered an alliance with the Great Elves of Blackwood Forest and called the towns’ men, including Shane’s and Noka’s fathers, to arms to fight for the kingdom.
Three years the battle went on and King Tarn finally had his victory. He self proclaimed himself emperor of Simaron.
“Now…” said Kreen suddenly breaking Noka’s line of thought. “It’s best ye lads head for home, yer Mums’ ain’t going to be happy if yer not home in time for supper.”
And with that Kreen walked off humming an old festival tune.
“Shane…why did you take my sword?” Asked Noka looking at Shane.
“…My mum is sick…and the High wizards won’t help her unless I got some money...” said Shane his head still facing downwards.
“If you just asked Shane my Mother might have helped, you know how good a healer she is” Said Noka placing a gentle hand on Shane’s right shoulder.
“I didn’t want to bother her…a poor kid like me don’t got no right to be buggin’ the rich”
Noka chuckled lightly.
“Shane you and any poor person are welcome in our home, you know that” he pulled Shane in to a hug getting his clean clothes a little dirty from the dirt that had collected on Shane’s clothes. “Our mothers and fathers were good friends, you have no reason to not come to our house.”
“T-thank you Noka,” said Shane in a muffled voice for he had buried his tear stained eyes in to Noka’s shirt. “I won’t forget this”
“Anytime Shane” said Noka “Now shall we get going then?”
Shane Nodded as Noka put an arm around his shoulders and led him down the streets to a narrower street surrounded by Giant trees and white and red rose bushes, which soon lead to a large house that was laid farther away from the Town and more towards the forest. For Noka and His mother found it more Comforting to be away from the business of the Town Streets. In the front garden Noka’s mother had planted all kinds of herbs and spices for her medicines and by the door there was a small sign that read:
Though they may have left us,
Our love will always be with them…
- Crystina Kasano
Shane stopped to look at the sign and Noka turned to look at the sing too.
“Noka? What does the saying mean?” asked Shane
“It means that the Men lost in the war will always be with there loved ones no matter where they are.” Said a soft loving voice from behind them. “Noka…there you are I thought you weren’t coming home tonight, Don’t you have hunting lessons today with master Gilron? He told me you would be gone for a while possibly days.”
“Sorry mother, I had a slight delay” said Noka quickly Glancing at Shane.
“Hello Shane, What can I do for you today?” said Crystina
“My mum is sick, Noka said you might be able to help her…Please…”Shane said hopefully.
Crystina nodded and walked in to the house and came back with a small bottle of green liquid.
“Give this to your mother once a day, and she will be better in no time.” With a last smile she turned to Noka. “Now I think its time for you to get going”
“Yes mother” and with that Noka turned and Ran back through the streets of town until he reached the gates of town. “Master Gilron?”
“Noka your late” Said an old man with graying brown hair and bright blue eyes, which was common for the Town, and pale skin. He also had a staff in one hand and a bow in the other with a quiver of arrows hanging on his back, and his clothes were consisted of a full set of leather. “You ready to go boy?”
“Yes sir” said Noka with a grin from ear to ear.
“Then lets head out”
As Noka and Gilron began to head out Shane came bounding out from one of the side ally ways.
“Noka! Master Gilron wait!” Shane cried skidding to a stop.
“Can I help you Shane?” said Gilron raising an eyebrow.
“Sorry sir this won’t take long…” Shane turned to Noka. “ Take this…” he handed Noka a crystal about the size of a walnut, but it was red with a cat like slit in it.
“Shane, I can’t take this…” said Noka trying to hand it back only to have his hand pushed away.
“No…you can take it, I stole it from your father’s keep safe box that day I slipped in to your house two years back. I’m really sorry I thought I could sell it…but there was something about it, so I kept it…I Know your father would want you to have it now” soon after a quick bow to Gilron Shane turned and ran off back down the ally way.
“Are you mad at him Noka?” asked Master Gilron looking at the crystal.
“No sir, I understand the reason the way he is, is to help his small family get by.”
“And that is the way of a true man, now come we have much to do.”
As Noka began to set out with Gilron he felt a shiver run down his spine, a sign of bad luck.
