♠I walked through the emptiness...♣
Dareia lay on her bed, watching her brand new TV that was given to her by her parents for her birthday, yesterday. She shot a quick, nervous glance towards a jewelry box that lay on the floor by her doorway. It was an ancient thing, painted with crumbling naked cherubs and faded pink ribbons. It was a present from her grandparents but, once again, they were not the ones to give it to her. Apparently they were on a big retreat in the Himalayas. They were never there. Whenever Reia asked about them, they were somewhere exciting like Alaska and Moscow. She couldn't recall a single time that she had ever met them in person. Yet they were sending her extravagant and probably priceless gifts every year. This year she had gotten the mysterious jewelry box with an ancient lock on the front. This present had come with an equally ancient key and a note that said, “ When the time is right,” in hurried writing. Reia assumed that it had meant she would have to wait to meet her grandparents. Shi knew differently. She had watched Dareia study the box closely for twenty minutes before finally deciding it was safe, but not cheerful enough to keep near her. When Dae had originally opened the package, she had automatically thought the key belonged to the jewelry box it was sent with. When she tried, however, it wouldn’t open. After several attempts, she had set it back down by the door. That night, while ‘peacefully’ sleeping, the mark she had had since she was born seared and writhed pain fully, as if someone was intent on burning it into her skin. She screamed and wailed in agony, but nobody came to her aid. Someone heard her pained cries, though. Shi, hands pressed against the glass of the ornate mirror, watched intently with and evil grin spread across her face.
