have you ever wandered why we shoot off fireworks on the forth of july?

well heres the answer, in the revolutionary war...soldiers would fire off "flares" into the sky to wherever a battle was over, and these were later nick-named "fireworks"

the did not have sufficiticated flares of today's age, so there flares consisted of wood tubes that launched 100 ft. tall sparks into the sky
