She was beautiful that day. Her wings had been hidden perfectly in her costume, the feathers clipped until she was positive they would simply whither away. Her eyes were sparkling with the hope of the evening and her smile was sending waves of euphoria across the room. Her black dress fit snugly, but still had the appearance of elegant innocence that all angels strived for. Blood red hair fell in a pool around her, pale skin glowing with a blush. Tonight was the night. Tonight they were free…
Her kind had always roamed the nights. Lustrous wings of all colors had filled the skies in the secrecy of the sleeping hour. Without fear of hatred or lust they flew across cities and towns seasoning the air with joyous laughter and song so pleasant and sweet that if the sound was to reach children’s ears it would draw them from their beds in curious enchantment. Yes, night had been their one and only home.
After this one fateful day, however, all would be allowed to spread their wings in the daytime. Warmth would flood over them as water over the smooth rocks of a river bed when they stretched out in the sun for the first time since their creation. New fire would light their eyes and for once their peace would soothe the rough destructive ways of the world. If they are accepted into society, no one will be able to deny their Lord’s existence.
With that, the young androgynous walked gracefully into the room. The buzz of noise around her ceased. In awe all had gone silent. She could feel the pressing of the eyes on her skin like hands pushing her back. She couldn’t seem to focus to breath, as she had been taught to do. Nor could she make even the faintest heartbeat flair in her chest. So many of her fellow sufferers fates rest on her actions and yet she couldn’t seem to remember the simplest to allow the comfort in the humans that was needed.
Suddenly, the urge to let out a song filled her, and she had to fight down her voice. She was to remain silent through the night, until her hour had come. They had guessed that many would assume the large red wings to be simply a costume of sorts; and as the poor dim humans returned to their plates, returned to their conversations, it was apparent that they had guessed correctly. She let out a relieved sigh, and looked down at the toddler by her side. He was there to look adorable, to ease the air around her, and draw attention away from any mistakes she might make. Though he was new to this earth, having only been created a few decades ago, it didn’t matter. He knew how and when to breathe, he still had the faint remnants of a heartbeat, and he was still beautiful. That was all that was needed to ease their way into the world’s society.
“We have a lovely new lady here to join us in our Neighborhood party, everyone give her a hand to welcome her into her home!” The man in front of her smiled, but his eyes dropped considerably below her face. She wished her female form hadn’t been so amply filled, she tended to have trouble when greeting men. “And what is this angel’s name?” At hearing her species mentioned, she froze, before realizing he believed he was making a joke reference to her fake wings.
“Oh, I’m…” What name had they given her? She was to call herself a name in their presence. “I’m Elizabeth. I’m sorry, I’m horribly shy, I may freeze up on occasion.” Attempt to start small talk.
“That’s ok, I’m sure many of us remember what its like to not know anyone. So, where did you come from…”
She smiled and knew she had succeeded in her task. Now, how was she to reveal herself in a non-threatening way? For all of her work, she hoped to feel sunlight tomorrow. She would fly without the chains of the night bound to her. Succeed or no, they would all be released. Into the reality, into the world, with free will. It was their reward. Their reward for the fall.
