I've heard all kinds of things about "Who cares about bass players?" Well, guess what, *I* care about bass players! So, following is a list of my top 20.
They are in no order at all, because it would have been too difficult to make an actual Top 20 - in order. These bass players are just awesome.
Tom Petersson [Cheap Trick] - He invented the 12 string bass guitar. If you don't believe he's a good bass player, just listen to Cheap Trick's early stuff (1977) and 2009's "Sick Man of Europe". You're welcome. Oh, and "Gonna Raise Hell".
John Taylor [Duran Duran] - His bass work on "Rio" is great! He's a good bass player plus all the girls swooned over him in the 80s.
Geddy Lee [Rush] - Need I say much? Uh, he's awesome. Anything you could say about him is an understatement.
Clive Mitten [Twelfth Night] - A great bass player. Loved his work on the whole Live at the Target album.
Steve Fossen [Heart] - He was their original bass player. I feel like they've replaced their bass players more than any other member...Anyway, Steve's a great bass player.
Tony Levin [King Crimson] - Their bass player from the 80s until the early 2000s. He's quite good.
Chris Squire [Yes] - "A nightmare is having two bass players on stage". Chris plays an epic three necked bass guitar at times. At the Yes show in Clearwater earlier this year, he brought it out. It was pretty epic.
Dougie Thomson [Supertramp] - I love Supertramp and I love Dougie Thomson. He's just all around a great bass player.
Mel Schacher [Grand Funk Railroad] - In the words of Homer Simpson, his bass playing is bong-rattling.
John Deacon [Queen] - It's John Deacon! Come on, he's awesome. He also wrote a lot of Queen's biggest hits.
Steve Harris [Iron Maiden] - Another primary songwriter.
Rick Savage [Def Leppard] - Otherwise known as "Sav" since there's another Rick [Allen].
Jon Entwistle [The Who] - Anything said about him is an understatement. I mean, seriously.
Alan Cartwright [Procol Harum] - According to Wikipedia, and I quote, "Alan Cartwright (born Alan George Cartwright, 10 October 1945, London, England) was a bass player, but now runs a bar."
Jack Bruce [Cream] - Awesome.
Bob Daisley [Rainbow]
Geezer Butler [Black Sabbath] - Still kicks a** playing the bass. Man.
Greg Lake [King Crimson] - He's just an awesome progressive rock bassist. He was great with King Crimson and with ELP.
Glenn Cornick [Jethro Tull] - Listen to any Jethro Tull song with Glenn playing bass.
Roger Waters [Pink Floyd] - Can't say anything, for it would be an understatement.
