It was a beach day.
In the sky the clouds were white and spread out, showing a blue that was vibrant and clear and allowing the sun to shine down on the white sanded beach. A soft breeze carried the music of the crashing waves into the air.
For a child who had never seen the sea before, this sight was impossible. Something that reached out beyond your vision and disappeared into the very depths of infinity. This was nature at it's finest.
Unlike adults who feel smaller in the presence of such greatness, and try to think of answers for the mysteries presented to them by this view. A child sees it for what it is. They see a miracle, something that is there and meant to be loved and cherished. They see a place to play and explore, they could care less about how deep it goes or how much water it contains. They don't care about the movement of the tides or why waves constantly throw themselves at the sand.
Although, as Andrea watched the little pack of children in front of her she couldn't help but muse at the silent shock on their faces. What were they all thinking? She wondered, letting them take in the sight before them as she walked across the sand to find a spot to conjure up their many blankets, snack boxes, and umbrellas.
"Need help mom?" Matt's voice made her smile as it floated to her on the breeze. She should of known he wouldn't be standing in shock like the other children. Matt had lived in the ocean up until a year ago, and so the sight before them was probably nothing compared to what he'd already seen in his short life.
Of course Andrea was also smiling because he'd called her mom. She couldn't help herself, just hearing him call her that made her feel warm inside.
"No Matt, I'm fine. Go play with the others." She said with a smile as she glanced at him over her shoulder. With a nod Matt sprinted off across the sand, bare feet kicking up waves of golden grains and blond hair catching the sunlight. He was energetic and alive, catching Ty's hand and dragging the pale brown haired boy closer to the water.
"Come on Sora!" She heard him yell, as her daughter came to life and sprinted after them, her own blond hair caught up in two pigtails, her small body wrapped in a light blue one piece with dolphins down the sides.
"This was a good idea Andrea." Harry said moving to kiss his wife's cheek as he came up beside her. In his arms he held T.k, clothed in his own little swimsuit with a thumb in his mouth. "Their never going to forget this."
"I hope not." She said smiling, and putting her hands on her hips. "It's going to be killer keeping an eye on everyone with just the two of us."
"Three."
Turning around in surprise Andrea blinked at the young girl that stood before her. It's not that she'd forgotten that Dance was with them, it's just that she hadn't really brought the girl here just so she could watch over her brother and sister like she normally did. She'd been hoping all the kids could have fun and that included the eldest. Of course she should of known that Dance wouldn't be just playing in the sand. With her little half sister Kari, balanced on one hip she looked up at Andrea with intense and overly mature blue eyes, especially for an twelve year old.
"I'm going to be keeping an eye on them too. Just so you know.." Turning her attention to Harry she held out her other arm. "I'll take him, we can play in the sand."
Andrea gave her husband a look but Harry shrugged and handed T.k over. Then together they watched as the young blond moved off toward a spot of sand that was closer to the water.
---------------
Setting the two babies down on the sand was a job in itself. Dance had to make sure that if they got tired they didn't just fall on their backs, or their faces. At three years old they had a habit of doing that. She also had to be sure that they were far enough from the lapping waves so that the water didn't swoop in and carry them away. T.k might be an excellent swimmer for only three years old, but Kari who was the same age had never seen water before. And the way she eyed it now, with their father's cold and calculating golden eyes, was with fear and awe.
Once she'd gotten them situated Dance settled into the sand herself , crossing her legs and lifting her hands to pull her thick blond hair up into a tight bun. Her eyes closing as she listened to the waves crashing just feet from her. The ultimate song, the call that had her wanting nothing more then to get up dance.
But she hadn't danced in almost a hundred years. (She may have looked twelve but she aged rather slowly, in reality she was a lot older) When her mother died she'd stopped dancing, though she could still feel the urge in her muscles. Uncontrollably her legs would twitch and kick, spasms of nerves snaking down her skin in a painful rhythm. At night when she was able to sleep she tossed and turned on the bed, her legs twitching as she tangled herself in the sheets. She knew dancing would make it go away...but she didn't want to, not yet. A time would come when her nickname wouldn't be a painful reminder of how she'd been. But for now she would suffer in silence.
When her eyes opened again, she felt Andrea's shadow looming over her. The tall witch was clothed in a simple black two piece swimsuit, her own blond hair tied up in braids and pinned to her head. Dropping a small plastic bucket full of shovels and little shapes, beside them she sat down just a little behind Dance, her other hand carrying two bottles of sunscreen.
"Don't want your dad killing me cause you guys got sunburn." She muttered as she took the weaker of the two and squirted some onto her hands. Silently she began to rub it onto Dance's skin, which was naturally tanned. The other stronger bottle of sunscreen was of course for T.k, Matt, Ty, and Kari. All of which were rather pale.
Taking up the other bottle, Dance gestured for her little sister to come toward her. Slowly Kari crawled forward, not trusting the shifty sand enough to walk to her sister she sat down in front of Dance and smiled at the other girl over her shoulder. "This is going to be a little cold okay?" She said smiling before brushing her sister's long black curls over her shoulders and begin to rub the sunscreen on the paper white skin.
Dance sometimes marveled when she looked at her little half sister. Kari had skin so pale that sometimes Dance felt she could see through it. But where on some this looked pasty, or unattractive...on Kari the skin was like snow. It was smooth and unblemished, making the black hair that tumbled from her head seem even darker, like a room with no light. It was because of this pure white skin that Dance put on a little more sunscreen, lathering it onto her sister in hopes that the sun wouldn't burn her.
------
When everyone was covered in sunscreen, the kids focused on their play, among other things.
"Did you really live out there Matt?" Ty, yelled, standing cautiously in the shallow part of the water, while Sora and Matt splashed each other a little further out. To Ty this whole idea of a person living underwater sounded stupid. But if Matt said it had happened then he believed him, although he didn't understand how anyone could live in something that tasted so salty.
"Yep!" Matt said, swimming closer so that his feet touched the sand again. "But it's no fun just standing here. Come swim with us." He said, holding how his hand to his best friend.
Ty eyed it suspiciously, one eyebrow lifting and his nose crinkling. "I don't think so. I can't swim...so this is as far as I go. Plus, how do I know there aren't sharks or something. If you ask me I think you guys should come back...we can find something else to do."
For a moment Matt looked surprised, but then he grinned; bright and blinding. "So what if you can't swim? I can teach you!"
"Matt I don't think...I was meant to swim"
"Don't be stupid. Everyone can swim." Reaching forward he grabbed Ty's hand and tugged him. "Come on."
"NO!" Ty yelled, yanking back and staying where his feet touched the ground. For a moment he'd felt himself float and for some reason that feeling scared him down to the pit of his stomach.
"Ty, don't be such a wuss, let him teach you." This time Sora was talking, and as always when she spoke both boys turned their head and looked at her as though hypnotized. To Ty nothing looked prettier then Sora's smile, even with a baby tooth missing. "It's fun out here." She said splashing and then floating on her back.
Suddenly, Ty was determined. He felt a surge of something fill him, and at his wrist, the bracelet his father told him always to wear blinked softly, although no one noticed it. "Alright!" He said taking a few steps forward. Feeling the water lift him Ty still felt determined, even when he was splashing hard and frantic to stay with his head above the surface. Thankfully though he was comforted by Sora's face which always hovered close by, and Matt's hands holding him up.
[To be continued....again. Still a lot more to go...lol]
