Everything in Kyle’s life had been normal up until the moment he met his next door neighbors. They were…Odd to say the very least. In fact, they were most certainly not human. Of course, Kyle knew nothing of this. He was oblivious to their strange and otherworldly habits.
He was oblivious until the neighbors tried to take a bite out of him, that is.
It had been a warm and sunny day in the little town of Harker, Ohio. Bees were flying around as Kyle and his best friend, Kayla, sat around the local pool.
Kayla was dipping her feet in the pool as their son, Zero, peered over at them. Kyle shivered under his gaze ever so slightly. What the hell is with those eyes?
Zero walked over, slowly and sat down. “Hello, neighbor,” he said, kindly. “How are you, today?”
Kyle tried not to look into the other boy’s eyes. They gave him the creeps no matter how long he knew the kid. “Err… fine! What about you Kayla? How are you?” Kyle chuckled nervously.
Kayla gave him a look before nodding a smiling at Zero. “Hello, Zero. I am fine. You?”
“I’m okay, for the moment.” A shadow of what seemed to be a smirk slid over his features. There was nothing good happening when Zero had a smirk instead of his usual frown. Oh god. He’s not even glaring. And then he caught his eye. A-Are his eyes…
“Red?”
“Um… what?” he asked, as his eyes changed shade to their normal light purple.
Kyle gulped slightly and inched away from him. “What do you mean, ‘for the moment’, ol’ buddy, ol’ friend, ol’ pal?”
Kayla snorted at her friend and rolled her eyes. “What a baby…” she muttered out.
“I mean that it could change.” Zero replied calmly, a slight glare narrowing his eyes. Kyle looked away, sort of scared, and noted the girls fangirling in the background. He then looked to Kayla. She was jumping into the water, splashing both boys.
“Thanks, Kayla!” He yelled, trying to take his mind off of the whole Zero thing. He jumped in and swam towards Kayla as quickly as possible. “Wait up!”
Zero smiled at Kyle and walked out of the pool. He’d approach him later, now was not the time.
Kayla paused and glanced at Kyle over her shoulder. “Get me a donut.”
Kyle quickly stopped so he wouldn’t run into the brown haired female. “Why the heck would I get you a donut?”
“Because I have a key to your room.”
“Chocolate?”
“You know me so well.” Kayla stated as she continued swimming.
Meanwhile, Zero was having an odd conversation with Ichiru and Nero, his twin brother and younger sister. Nero was casually passing gay comments while Ichiru was trying to make her shut up.
“Nero, don’t make me bite you. You know I will.” Nero promptly closed her mouth and gave him a shy look as blush covered her face. Zero chuckled quietly and continued on.
“So then, how did the interaction go?”
“Now wasn’t a good time. That girl was with him.” Venom coated his words like a soft blanket of snow. Nero, who was the one who’d pointed Kyle out to Zero, gave him a surprisingly sympathetic look and held his hand. A soft smile graced both of them for a moment before disappearing.
“I think we should head home then. Mother found a rather tasty meal for lunch.”
Kyle, coming back from the concession stands, sat at the pool's edge. "Here's your doughnut! No eating in the pool, though!" he yelled with a smirk.
Kayla swam over. "Fine," she said, taking a bite.
"Ha! Now you can't even get in the water for half an hour!" he said, taking the key.
Kayla snorted and dunked her head under the water before reaching over and yanking the donut out of Kyle's hand.
"Mine." She stated simply. Kyle jumped back from the side of the pool. She could be so scary sometimes.
"Yeah yeah." He looked off to the side and saw that it was nearly time to leave. He waved and told Kayla the information and grabbed his things.
"Guess what honey," his mother stared, "We're having dinner with our neighbors tonight!" Dinnertime. Zero was eagerly awaiting it. He would finally get to taste fresh blood and not the cheap, frozen and thawed, old timer blood from people who 'donated their bodies to science'.
Kyle's eyes widened and he wondered why God hated him.
Zero had called dibs on Kyle earlier. As it was, he intended to turn him, not eat him. Kyle did, however, look quite tasty with how his parents had dressed him. Zero discreetly licked his lips. He could already taste the sweet blood on his tongue. He couldn't wait and the anticipation was obvious only to his siblings.
"You should calm down, Zero. Kyle might notice. He's more perceptive than the others." He nodded and then smiled at his sister.
Kyle shivered. Something wasn't right. He figured it was the neighbors. He was right, though he had no idea to what extent. Kyle's mom, Peggy, smiled at Zero and his family. "Hello! I'm Peggy! This over here-" she pointed to her husband "is John. I'm sure you've already met Kyle."
The parents nodded and began to chat quietly. Zero approached Kyle and smiled as pleasantly as he could. It was then he attempted, as best he could, to strike a conversation with him.
"So... How's school going for you?"
"Uh... fine... thanks. You?" Kyle replied politely. He really hated to talk about school. Not only did he hate to talk about school but he also couldn't help but feel that something was off. He shifted in his seat as Zero offered a quiet, "It's okay."
God did Zero feel stupid right now. He wanted so bad to bite him and resisting the urge was rather hard. It resulted in his uncharacteristically good behavior. There wasn't anything to even really talk about that wouldn't offend Kyle in some way.
"Are you uncomfortable?"
"Huh? N-no... just... an off day..." he lied. Kyle ate quietly for a while before getting up. "Um, could I use your bathroom?" he asked.
"Down the hall, to the left, second door." Zero said, pointing.
"Thanks," he replied, walking as fast as he could without people noticing he was rushing.
"Why does he keep looking at me like I'm some sort of snack?" Kyle waited a while longer before somebody came and knocked on the door lightly.
"Are you okay, Kyle?" It just had to be Zero. He responded quickly and tried to calm himself down. Slowly, the door opened to reveal a worried looked boy. And Zero never looked like that. "Um... I wasn't done..." Kyle said, shakily.
"Are you alright?" Zero asked. "You seem... I dunno... a little jumpy, today. You were fine at the pool."
Kyle hesitated before shrugging. "Not use to the whole, 'going to eat with the neighbor' thing, you know?"
Zero chuckled.
"It's not that odd, really. We did it all the time from where we moved from." Kyle shivered slightly.
"Cold?" A nod was the response. Zero turned up the thermostat and looked over to see if it was good.
"Yeah..."
Kyle got up and walked out towards the table they were eating at. Zero followed a little later - he had to use the bathroom first. Once they had all gathered yet again, Zero's parents announced that dessert was too be served.
"And what would that be?" Kyle asked in a polite manner. They grinned, showing their fangs.
"Why, the three of you." And then, they lunged. The first ones down were the parents of course. Zero grabbed Kyle and muttered a soft apology.
"You're going to be really thirsty when you wake up." And his fangs sank into Kyle soft, tender flesh.
