"We have to hurry," I said. "I took a look inside their minds and confirmed our suspcions Mat. Those are the sailors who wanted to expose Melissa."
"We'll never catch them like this then," Mat said. (Strange. The Phantom and I were running as fast as we could, but Mat didn't even seem tired. It was like he was staying behind out of politeness and if we weren't here he'd leave us in the dust. Ugh! So frustrating.)
"Okay," I said sarcastically, coming to a stop and panting near a lamp post. "What do you suggest we do?"
"Hold my hand. Each of you take one of my hands."
I had only time to grab his left... hand (It seemed more like a paw to me.) before we were flying down the street faster than the North Wind. The resistance that met our amazing speed was colder than the North Wind too; 'So this is Mat's Sonic Dash,' I thought. 'Amazing. I'd like to see what he can do at night.' (Okay, I admit it. I'm kind of a sucker for Sonic Unleashed. sweatdrop redface But why not? It rocks.)
The next thing I knew, we were at the dock and I heard the voices of those God-be-damned sailors somewhere ahead of us. I heard a splash and immediately took off running. "Come on!" I shouted. "If they did what I think they just did, we're all in deep trouble."
Mat called as he ran to catch up with me, "I think I heard something down there."
We veered right to the banister overlooking the docks below. There was a big tank full of water, with Melissa inside, and the two sailors laughing all pirate like. (I'll never forgive those fish-man pirates for what they did to Gourami.)
We jumped down, making as little noise as possible. "Melissa!" I exclaimed, forgetting where we were for a minute.
"Hey, keep quiet," Mat said, clamping a hand to my mouth. "We don't want to blow our cover."
"Oh, right. Sorry. sweatdrop "
"Don't worry Melissa, we'll get you out of there," Mat said in his best Aerrow voice. (I think if Melissa and I had switched places, she would have laughed. She just loves Storm Hawks.)
I glanced at Melissa; her hands' positions, one clamping her throat and the other on the side of the tank, could only mean one thing: she needed air and fast! "We need to get her out of there," I told Mat. "She needs air. She may be a mermaid but she can only breathe so long as a human, even though she can breathe for longer.
"We need to get the lid off the tank."
"Oh, and I should mention. She can't swim as a human."
"Then I'll dive in there and get her out."
"Of course. Where was my head?" I said.
We climbed up a ladder to the top of the tank. (Thank goodness those sailors were so careless.) "One...two...three!" we said together as we pushed the lid off of the tank. "You fend them off, or do you need to get Melissa?" Mat asked.
"Don't worry about me," I said. "There's no time to waste. Get Melissa, now!"
Mat dived in, and I slid down the ladder and prepared what little fighting magic I had. (Fighting magic comes on more advanced levels of sea-witch magic, and I was just beginning more in-depth training. [No pun intended.])
I formed a shield of air around myself and sprayed the sailors with mist. They barely had time to look up when I unleashed a torrent of icy daggers upon them. One of them looked down for the count, but the others quickly charged me. I defended with spells that I knew, using the fog to my advantage. (Even on a sunny day I would have had a chance on that dock, but the fog made it easier for me to dodge their attacks and resupply my magic. A sea-witch is nothing without her native element (i.e. water).)
Even though I was clearly going to win, I began panicking; what if Melissa had already transformed by now?! "Let's help Anastasia."
'Phew!' Relief surged through me as Melissa and Mat rushed to join me. Phantom still stood up there, omnicient and yet present; he was our trump card if I failed to hold these ruffians back. Melissa noted his prescence up there, well more like gawked at it, and then went all white eyed.
(Sorry if I have to stop here. Flotsam and I are going on an expedition to the surface to practice the same spell that I used on that misty day. More later. It's really good too.)
