Scene: a speck on the naked ocean horizon (In the black between scenes are accusing pointing fingers and other flashes from the trial all in red-scale.) Narration: For the Plague of Tybirum, we find you guilty! Scene: Closer to the speck, it is a boat tossed about on the waves. Narration: You claimed to study forbidden knowledge for the good of all. Yet when the island people needed you most, you walked the streets and chose those who you would save and those you would not. You dealt out life and death as if you were the Almighty God. For your pride, the deaths of all the hundreds of men, women, and children who succumbed to the sickness shall be branded upon your body and soul. Janay: I gave up everything for them. I’m a scientist! Not an angel! Scene: Closer to the boat, a woman lies there unconscious, sunburned, and weak Narration: You are a heretic. May you wander the waters beyond the Fair Plain and never be at peace. Janay: I didn’t do anything wrong! I was trying to help! Scene: close-up on the worried, hollow face of the woman. SFX: THUD! Scene: Expand to see a smallish yacht has bumped along side of the small boat. A young man is standing at the side, looking concerned.
Scene: Janay is sleeping on a bed in the cabin. Scene: She bolts upright with a yell Janay: It’s not my fault! Scene: Janay looks around bewildered. Scene: Janay pulls the blanket over her boobs, even though she’s not showing anything—typical surprised in bed pose. Gabryle (off screen): I’m sure it’s not Scene: Gabe’s face looking down at Janay from the entrance to below decks Gabe: Good afternoon, Red Lady. Scene: Gabryle reaches out a hand to the scared Janay and offers a fish kabob. Gabe: You’re just in time to share my dinner.
Scene: Janay stares at Gabe. Scene: Janay’s hand reaches out for the kabob. Scene: Janay’s hand takes the end of the kabob. Scene: Gabe lets go and the kabob leaves a vapor trail as it leaves the scene. Scene: Janay’s hand returns the empty stick. Scene: Gabe’s profile looks at the stick in disbelief. Gabe: I think you’re hungry.
Scene: Janay and Gabe are sitting above deck, watching the sun set. Scene: Janay and Gabe are sitting above deck, watching the sun set. Gabe offers Janay a bottle. Scene: Janay and Gabe are sitting above deck, watching the sun set. Janay upends the bottle. Scene: Janay and Gabe are sitting above deck, watching the sun set a little lower. Gabe: So… Scene: Janay and Gabe are sitting above deck, watching the sun set a little lower. Gabe:… I noticed that burn on the back of your neck. It looked infected. Scene: Janay and Gabe are sitting above deck, watching the sun set a little lower. Janay drinks again. Gabe: I hope you didn’t mind I cleaned it up a little. How’d you get it anyway? Scene: Janay’s profile against the scarlet sunset. Janay has tears running down her face. Scene: Gabe reaches out a hand and sets it on her shoulder. Janay drains the bottle. Gabe: I’m sorry. I didn’t mean— Scene: Janay starts sobbing into her hands and drops the bottle.. Gabe looks totally lost and more than a little worried. Janay: You can’t cure cholera with s**t in the streets!
Scene: Portrait shot of Janay staring into the “camera” with tears running down her face. Gabe is at her side, arms around her , looking concerned. Janay: It’s not my fault everyone died…Gave up everything to save as many as possible. But the riots…and the fires…I spent a decade...studying chemistry and medicine and botany and biology …to prevent the plague that killed my parents…and now they brand me for Pride and banish me from everything I love..all because those idiots…didn’t understand basic hygiene! Scene: Gabe looks to the side considering. Janay buries her face in her arms. Gabe: Is there anything I can do? Scene: Gabe looking leery. Janay peaking over her arms at him. Janay: You could give me some more rum.
Scene: Janay is lying on deck with a bottle of rum in one hand and looking very drunk. Caption: Some time later. Gabe (off Screen): You never told me your name. Scene: Camera tilts to show Gabe sitting across from Janay, leaning against the railing of his boat, watching Janay. Janay: Doesn’t matter anymore. Soon as I’m drunk enough, I’m jumping off the boat and drowning. Gabe: I think you’re too drunk to move right now. Scene: Janay tries to get up. Scene: Janay tries to get up the other way. Scene: Janay lies back down. Janay: Soon as I’m sober enough, I’m jumping off the boat and drowning.
Scene: Gabe looks out over the starlit ocean. Gabe: So you’re the Deadly Sin Incarnate of Pride. Boy, are you going to be hurting in the morning. Janay: No, I’m no. I’m going to be drowned in the morning. Scene: Gabe looks skeptically at Janay. Gabe: It doesn’t work that way if you can breathe underwater. Scene: Janay’s eyes start drifting closed. Janay: Can’t breathe water. Can’t breathe rum either. Scene: Still on Janay’s face, but Gabe is tucking a blanket around her shoulder. Gabe: Let me know when you want to jump overboard. Janay: Soon as I’m sober.
