Hurricane Katrina
Like a lot of people the last couple of days, I've had to endure evacuating for hurricane Katrina, a catagory five hurricane that ravaged most of the gulf coast. I lived in St. Bernard Perish, just to the east of New Orleans, and from what I hear, is completly under water. My family managed to evacuate to several places across the country but I still have friends that are missing.
I've found myself staying with my Uncle's fiance in Houston, TX. We're able to go to the zoo, the science museum, and other local tourist attrations for free thanks to the generosity of this city and its people.
I never thought that I would ever be something called a refugee... I'll take a tropical storm Cindy any day...
If anyone has any information about the St. Bernard perish area, I would be most greatful, as I still do not know what has happened to my home.
Update! One of my missing friends has been located in Atlanta.. my cell phone finally got through.
It seems as if cell calls are hit and miss, sometimes they get through, most of the time they do not.
Update 2! And now I've found Jessica! Seems that she's in Mississippi with her parents, power and waterless, but otherwise fine.

Yeah, I'm not sure what my little sisters are going to do. My immediate family has driven up to West Virginia and is currently staying with my Aunt Shielia. David's family is all in Hammond and his grandmother, unwisely wants to go back to Metairie. I have seen it quoted that Metairie is now facing primitive conditions, lacking in electricity, water, or sanitation. I personally think she's crazy.

whee The city of Houston Texas, has been very kind to the Gulf Coast evacuees. My boyfriend and I are now eatting very nicely with the aid of spifftacular food stamps. Not only are they feeding us. They've made a lot of their attractions free to us including the zoo, the science museums, as well as many others. (We even got free margaritas from Tequilla Willies!)

Before we knew it...
I didn't even know about the hurricane until the Friday before it hit. People at my work were talking about the hurricane that might hit us on Monday, and I was like, Really? but didn't think much of it.
My household and I were at first planning on riding it out like we do almost every hurricane. When my roomate's girlfriend left at 5am to evacuate with her family, he stayed up to watch the news a bit. At 6am Sunday morning he came banging on our door shouting that it was now a catagory 5 hurricane. Even though we had only had about 4 hours of sleep, we decided it was time to pack up and leave. So my fiance and I packed up a suitcase full of clothes, a few cherished items, and headed out... Not expecting there to be much damage, but felt better leaving anyway. I mean.. after all, our house didn't even flood during Hurricane Betsy, which was what all of our neighbors told us. I think there were only a handful of other houses on our entire street that evacuated. If I had realized that we were never going to get to go back... I would have packed more things.
Now we're staying at his Uncle's house in Houston, my immediate family having gone to West Virginia, and his staying rather close in Hammond. We're not sure when we're going to be able to return, or when our lives are going to return to some semblances of normality.. but we keep hope.
