This story takes place when Hel first creates the serum that turns all of the other children into experiments. This story is about the pain she suffered and the tears she shed over her mistakes. This is the beginning...
"Helena!" Carolyn called from downstairs. "Coming!" Helena called back. She picked up her book bag and swung it over her shoulder, sliding down the railing of the stairs. She flew past her father and her step mother, jumping off at the edge and running to the door. "Helena! You didn't get breakfast yet!" her father, Erik, called after her. "Can't eat, the big science fair is today!" Helena giggled as she ran through the open door and out into the street, off on her way to the 4th grade science fair... That had been two years ago...
"I can't talk, Kit, I'm trying to work," Hel said, not looking up at her newest experiment. "Alright, Hel..." Kit murmured, walking away sadly, her cat tail dragging on the ground. Hel sighed as she looked up. "Kit!" she called after her creation, but Kit didn't look back, she just kept on walking. "Free will..." Hel muttered. "No wonder Carolyn wants me to take it away..." She looked back at her work, her butterfly wings itching to get out of their holder on her back. "Dammit..." she muttered, tearing off the holding and letting her wings have some room to flutter. "Helena!" Hel heard Carolyn cry from the doorway. "How dare you show your wings when you are working!" "Look, having them out like this helps me think. I can't do anything right with them burning a hole in my back!" Hel muttered, rubbing her temple in exhastion. "I don't care if it helps you work better, do you want the other scientists laughing about my mutated daughter behind our backs?" "Look, Carolyn, I'm not your daughter and I never will be. I honestly don't care what the other scientists think, just as long as I'm allowed to do my research and experiments in peace! Now get out of my lab!" Carolyn growled and stomped out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Hel braced her hands on her lab table, her head limp over it. Rage filled her, and she swept her arm across the table, all the vials and reports going flying. Hel collapsed to the ground, weeping into her hands. "Oh, my brothers..." she sobbed. "I am so sorry..."
Darkness collected around the horizon line as th sun set. Hel looked out of her small rooms window. She had this room in the lab because some nights she just didn't want to go home. She pulled on her olive green dress and let her purple wings unfold. She opened her window quietly and glanced back at her closed door. "I'll be back... I swear I will... And when I do come back, we'll get our revenge," she whispered, her voice becoming layered with another woman's voice for a moment. Hel spread her wings and jumped from the open window, flying through the air and over the barbed fence, finally free of her experiments...
