I'm so not looking forward to tomorrow. Then again, anyone who is in a situation like mine could probably say the same thing.
I'm such a scrooge when it comes to Valentine's Day as well as another Charlie Brown. That is to say, I do not believe V-Day needs to be commercialized, but unfortunately, that's exactly what Hallmark and other card companies did to it. It re-enforces that fact that some of us are single or in a weird relationship to the point where you don't know what your partner has up his/her sleeve. You're so used to being so single that you just don't anticipate for something unusual.
And probably most of the time, nothing happens.
Take me, for an example. With the exception for my parents and the V-Day parties we had growing up in grade school (because we were forced to participate in V-Day activities), I never got anything really special. Then again, I always had a knack at ending my two relationships before Christmas (one ended before Halloween). It didn't help any when the school threw on the annual Sweethearts' Dance, and I spent the night at bowling alley each time... a few lanes away from high school couples are prettied up and classy for the dance (the same could be said about my prom years that I failed to attend). And when my friends were with their significant other and even my sister made plans to spend V-Day with her beaus, I would just be sitting at home indulging myself on the sweets Mom and Dad bought me.
Of course, that has changed these days... I no longer get my chocolates from my parents. I get gift cards from restaurants. Not that I was planning to eat out on V-Day or anything... But they hope I would each time.
I would end up using them for later occasions.
But there is more than just the jealousy I have toward all kinds of couples on V-Day. This is where my Charlie Brown personality kicks into high gear: I don't believe in commercializing or going all out on one day for the sake of love. Excuse me for my ignorance, but don't we have 364/365 other days we can do that? Even on Christmas, which was about 2 months ago, we go crazy buying presents for our loved ones!
Seriously, folks. Don't spend too much money just for one day on your girl/guy, even if jewelry stores have 50% off discount sales going on... Unless, guys, you are really thinking about popping the question to your girl and the time is right to get the ring. Otherwise, there is always her birthday and Christmas or one of those "just thinking about you moments." Roses are meant for more than just Valentine's Day. I mean if she is having a bad day at work or at home, random acts of kindness like sending her flowers will probably make her feel better. Chocolates... Well, guys, the best way to keep a girl happy during her time of the month is to chuck the sweets right at her with no questions. Okay, so stocking up on the sweets for her sake is not a bad idea with prices like these. But push comes to shove, there is always that bag of Hershey's Kisses in the check-out lanes in case of emergency.
The point is don't become one of the card companies' victims, and don't rub it in the faces of your friends who are single. You'll be wishing you never said "Happy Single Awareness Day" to them.
Not that I am screaming for attention or anything... But I think we tend to take February 14th a little too seriously. Okay. Not little. Waaaaaaay too seriously.
