My Long-a**, Ranty List of Gaia Exchange Pet Peeves |

These are general pet peeves. Almost every one has exceptional cases that I don't find annoying at all... And I've probably commited some of them myself. Eh, but I don't really feel like listing exceptions to the rule, and just because I do it doesn't change the fact that it annoys me, so yah.. It should also be noted that I haven't been a real participant in the Exchange for a while now... so they might be outdated. These are just some of *my* annoyances with some conventions and not so conventional things I've seen in the Exchange. In no particular order they are:
50k PURE gold --Because some gaia "gold" is only a gold/silver alloy worth less than PURE gold. And when someone says 50k what else could they be referring to besides gold? 50k in gaia oil stocks? 50,000 peasant items? Unless the buyer specifically states what items they are offering that are worth 50k, only a complete moron would refer to or interpret 50k as anything other than 50,000 in gold during an auction. All Gaia gold is created equal, no one gold is worth more than another. The "pure" is completely superfluous and *annoying*.
Liek OMG bye My SHizzLE it is t3h R0Xx0rz~! im a poor n00b gimme gold plzthnx! --I find it so depressing, seeing proof of how the internet is killing the English language. This actually pisses me off in the Charity forum more than the main Exchange forum. What are you thinking? Nothing shows gratitude better than not bothering to write out "Please" and "Thank you?" You're begging people for gold, people. I think that calls for proper English, don't you? And on a more general level, how do you look at what you write and not cringe at how gratingly annoying it is?
June Letters for 2k!! Just kidding. Buy my fox ears for 5k! --Because false advertising is really going to make me want to buy your overpriced items.
I just want to see how much I can get for this. I will not sell unless I get a really really really great offer... like an halo. --Um... Isn't that what GEN, etc. are for? The Exchange is ridiculously congested as it is. Why the hell are you making a thread, wasting bandwidth and people's time if you don't intend to sell something? Is it just so you can have the smug satisfaction of knowing how rich you really are? Seriously, go away and stop wasting other people's time.
I reserve the right not to sell. --Translation: I have no real intention of selling my item. There is no realistic offer that will satisfy my greed. But I will hold out this thin thread of hope that the item you've been questing for might be within your reach, and snatch it away only after I have satisfied myself that you have angsted sufficiently about whether you will get it. But really, it's your own fault for any bad feelings you may have afterwards. After all it is my Right, not to sell. Seriously, sellers need to get over themselves.
Auction will go until it reaches autobuy. --What are you, an idiot? Just say you're selling the item for the autobuy price.
Donators: 1. Nice person 1 2. Nice person 2 3. 4. etc. blank, etc. blank. *hint hint nudge nudge* --Okay, let's get this straight. I have no problem with accepting donations. I find nothing degrading about going to the Charity forum, and making a well written, polite request for donations from those who have the gold to spare and feel like donating. I think it is admirable when CompletelySelfSufficientUserX or IEarnedEveryPennyY is able to earn enough gold for some insanely expensive item without accepting a single donation. But not everyone has the time or resources to do that. So I don't think it is less of an accomplishment if you attain your goals with a little help from the generosity of people who want to help. And, of course, any donators to a quest should be thanked profusely and given proper acknowledgement.
What I do find pathetic and hard to tolerate is when people go around begging random other people for gold/items, when there is no reason to believe that they would want or intend to donate anything to anybody. And having empty numbers in a donators list is just one of the most annoying methods in my mind. First of all, you're numbering your donators. It may just be me, but this seems like an incredibly impersonal way to thank someone for their generosity. Secondly, do these people realize how presumptuous having blank numbers in their donation section looks? If you're going to beg for gold, do it the honest way and actually say it.
I know it says your price is non-negotiable, but can I get your Angelic Sash for 5k?!!1!eleventy-one! Plzzzz I'm so very poor, it's my birthday, my mom/grandmother/dog died, and I want one soooo much!11!!ichi! --No! No! A thousand times, No! I don't want to be a b***h about this, but please GO AWAY to the charity forum where you belong. And *please* grow a sense of dignity and pride while you're at it. What the hell are you doing on Gaia when your mom's just died anyways?!
5k and a peasant shirt?!!1/? --No means no. Please take that 5k and peasant shirt and buy a clue. Persistently bugging someone is the surest way to destroy any sympathy or urge to be generous towards you that they might have had.
Auction/Sale titles --If you're selling something for a fixed price don't lable it as an auction. That's just stupid and pointless. And I would really appreciate it if you would label auctions as auctions, even if they are a type of sale.
Selling Commons Above Store Price --Please die, you lying, swindling, evil scumbag. What the hell makes you think it's okay to rip people off like that?
Starting Bid --Your starting bid should be the minimum value that you would be willing to accept. Don't waste people's time by starting at an auction at a price you would never accept. It's stupid. It's so stupid. If you don't like the bids that other people are getting for the same item, just Sell it for a price you like. Don't even bother with an auction. Quitting an auction 5 minutes from ending time because the bid is too low is in poor taste. Avoid that by starting with a bid that you're willing to accept.
My autobuy issues: --First of all, I would like to say that I don't like autobuy. There is nothing more frustrating than when you're in a good bidding war, and someone comes in from nowhere and just autobuys the item. I like it on ebay, where the option *goes away* if people actually start bidding.
However, if you *do* have an autobuy price, please *stick* to it. Your autobuy price should be the highest price you would be comfortable accepting. Once someone bids the autobuy price, the auction should be over. It shouldn't matter if someone bids higher after that. If you're not going to abide by your autobuy price, don't set one in the first place. Novel concept, I know.
My PM bid issues --I hate pm bids with a firey passion. I think they are the most annoying things ever. The one case I *don't* mind them is in a secret ballot type auction, where each bidder gets only one chance to bid on the item, and noone sees what anyone else bid. They have no place in a normal auction. There is no point in bidding on an item if you do not know what the highest bid is, and even if the seller does post what the pm bid was, you have to take it on faith that they are telling the truth. It's messy, fill up the seller's inbox with unwanted and mostly useless pm's, and leads to misunderstandings and bad feelings.
Bad Auction Set Up --Please, please, PLEASE *plan* your auctions before you post them. It's not that hard. It takes all of 2 minutes. Just have a set of clearly written, concise rules. Concise is key. Include: - Whether you are accepting items, give an idea of what you value the items you are accepting (70% store price, lower GEN bracket, etc.). - A Starting Bid you'd be willing to accept. - Have a CLEAR ending time - If you are only accepting gold, have a minimum bid incriment that is reasonable for the value of your item. A 10k item should NOT have a minimum bid increment of 1 gold! stressed
Questing = Begging? --I find it unbearably sad that a word like "quest", which has such noble connotations otherwise, is reduced to a synonym for "begging." I hate that the actions of questors have made it so. But I hate even more when people scorn questing in general because "questing is begging." No, it's not. You are disrespecting yourself and the tons of people who quest for items without asking for a single donation.
I'm not questing because I intend to earn every penny --Yes, you are. Stop adding to this ignorant mentality!! Make questing noble again!!
Rule Breaking and Hypocrisy --Follow your own rules. If you say you won't accept pm bids, don't accept pm bids. If you set an autobuy stop the auction as soon as it is reached. If you set an ending time, do not accept bids made after it. And if you DO break your own rules, do not try to justify it to yourself and others. but they want it so much but it wouldn't be *fair* to the person who didn't bother to read the rules, if I didn't accept the higher bid from them. It's not their fault that they couldn't be arsed to follow the rules --Because making an exception for one person is SO fair to the several rule abiding people you just shafted. No. If you are going to break your own rules, at least have the integrity to admit why. It is because your sense of ethics is not strong enough to withstand the temptation of fake money to "buy" little pixel clothing to put on your pixel paper doll. So you're greedy. Whatever. Everyone has a bit of greed in them. Just don't lie to yourself and others about your motives. It's pathetic and disgusting.
