Daveigh woke as she usually does with the dawning sun. She never could sleep after the sun started hitting her in the face it just wasn’t possible anymore. She had been sleeping a bit fitfully this summer with the heat so that didn’t help her any and had left her rather tired most of the summer. She’d found herself falling asleep while grazing several times over the hot months. The heat helped the green grass grow but she was happy to notice that the nights had begun to cool down more than they had been through the rest of the summer. That meant fall was on the way and today was the community celebration for the changing of the seasons.
She’d been looking forward to today for weeks because it meant she would meet up with her daughter Deja Vu and spend time with her. She hadn’t really seen much of either of her children since they had hit adulthood and she really missed them. She understood they weren’t little anymore and had lives of their own. She just missed seeing their smiling faces.
Deja Vu had found herself a mate last time she had seen her. She was counting the days till Deja came to her with the news of grandchildren. Oh to be around foals again. She was almost tempted to go bug Yukio for more foals of her own. She had been raised among dozens of siblings and having such a small family of her own just didn’t seem right.
A scent wafted by on the breeze bringing Daveigh back to reality. She recognized the scent. Her daughter was near.
Deja Vu had woke up early without any assistance. She had been too excited for today to sleep soundly. She really enjoyed meeting up with her mother on gatherings like this. It gave them both a chance to catch up and just enjoy one another’s company. While most children would head off on their own and never look back, Deja was not that kind of mare. Her momma was her best friend and she took any excuse she could get to visit her. She spent more time with her mate now but she would always be a momma’s girl.
She was trotting her way up the hill towards where her mother was now. She’d left well before sun up to make her way here and she was absolutely ready for some celebration with her momma.
Daveigh smiled big as she spotted her daughter trotting her way and started walking towards her so as to meet her sooner. Once they were face to face they nuzzled each others cheek and bummed foreheads together. “It’s so good to see you again Deja. You are looking wonderful. How is my dear Javed doing?”
Deja stepped back a foot so she could see her mother in all her beauty. She had always wished she could be a beautiful as her even though every time she told her momma that she was adamant that she was beautiful. “He’s doing well. We’ve been migrating a bit. Trying out new places. It’s exciting to see the different scenery.”
Daveigh nodded and smiled. “I’m glad you two are having such a good time together. I remember migrating with your dad. It really made things exciting when we first started out.”
“Oh I remember those stories well. They were what made me want to do it with my mate. So I heard there would be a bonfire started at the beginning of the celebration. I was hoping we could make it to the village before they lit it.”
“We should get moving then cause they light that early.”
With the plan agreed on both mares turned in the direction of the native village and started on their way.
Daveigh didn’t reside too far from the village so they made it to the edge of the village in no time. As they made their way through the hustle and bustle among the teepees they had to watch their step so as to not step on any native children. They could be much smaller than foals and not always easily seen by a full grown mare. In the center of the village was the bonfire all set up and ready to be lit.
Both mares stopped towards the back of the crowd and simply waited as one of the natives made a speech. However neither mare understood native tongue so they simply waited for the native man to end his gibberish.
“You know I’ve heard that during this time a lot of individuals like to reminisce over the summer season leaving and ponder what they wish to happen in the fall season. But I dunno I think I prefer to make a wish over the fire as it is lit. I like to think that my wish might come true in the flames.” Deja Vu spoke while the native man continued to speak.
Daveigh turned her gaze on her daughter and felt an immense sense of pride. She had struggled to raise her and her brother Kama. She had her mates support of course but she had always doubted every decision she had made in her parenting. She had always been so worried that her children would not turn into good adults. Every little choice had been doubted till there was nothing but thoughts of being a bad mom. She had however been very wrong. She had done a wonderful job raising them both and couldn’t be prouder of either of them. If she had to make a wish on the bonfire it would simply be that when her kids have kids they do as good of a job as she did with them.
The native man finally finished his speech and tossed the torch he had been holding onto the structure of wood. It didn’t take long for the pile to blaze strong and bright. Deja Vu closed her eyes and pursed her lips. After a moment she opened them and smiled at her mother.
Daveigh smiled back and perked her ears. “So what did you wish for on the harvest bonfire?”
Deja smiled at her and shook her head. “Ah ah Momma. If I tell you my wish it won’t come true.”
Daveigh chuckled. “I didn’t know wishing star rules covered the bonfire.”
Deja vu nodded vigorously. “Well they do so don’t tell me your wish either. We don’t want your wish to not come true either.”
Daveigh smiled at her daughter and nodded. She certainly didn’t want hers to not come true.
