“Ahoy, ahoy, there be land ahead!”
From the crow’s nest cried a spying head
No happy jeers reply, instead,
Off deck is thrown a body, dead.
Let it be known that our captain’s law
Ensures that our ship may never haw
And though the snow begins to thaw
And islands glint, now green and raw
He bans from us the lovely rest
Of land that God to us had blest
To not be chained to east and west
And nostalgia not fill the rising breast
To utter of land is a sick taboo
The Captain here would never woo
And if a man dare state what’s true—
The ocean’s jaws are what ensue
And so we all, filthy, seasick
Fed up with Captain’s constant trick
A mass of sad, emotional wreck—
We threw the Captain off the deck.

- Title: The Ship That Never Rests
- Artist: Wounded Huntress

Description:
This is an example of cultural context and figurative language, and sadly, also happens to be a school assignment. =P
Indirectly, this poem speaks of the Middle-East's lack of political freedom, and how they are (now) overcoming it. But, given that it is written in figurative language, it can be enjoyed just as much even when the reader doesnt know the underlined meaning.
Detailed critique would be very much appreciated. - Date: 07/19/2011
