UP is about an old man named Carl Fredrickson and a young wilderness explorer named Russell take the old man’s house to Paradise Falls in South America. With only balloons attached to the house, they hope for the best. UP is a Disney Pixar Animation film written and directed by Pete Docter, released on May 29, 2009.
Carl Fredrickson (Edward Asner) as a young boy loved to watch Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), an adventurer, and all his discoveries from all over the world. Charles Muntz’s main goal is to find a Snipe (exotic bird) in South America and bring it back. Carl soon met a girl named Elle and they both loved Charles Muntz. Elle had a dream to take their clubhouse to Paradise Falls. Carl made the promise to take their clubhouse.
When they got older they got married. Their clubhouse was now their house. They got older and older without going to South America. They forgot their dream a little. When Carl remembered his promise (probably when he was in his 70’s) he bought tickets. Their adventure was close. However it was too late, Elle had passed away.
Carl lived on his own for awhile and had no accompany. Then one day Russell (Jordan Nagai), a very perky wilderness explorer, needed his assisting the elderly badge so he asked Carl if he needed any help. Carl gave him a job that is impossible, but Russell tried anyways. Carl for several reasons was forced to move to a retirement home but he didn’t want to give it up for anything. He considered it as Elle. When the retirement people came he released balloons from his chimney. He was headed to Paradise Falls and to keep his promise. His house started to rise off of the ground and then it started to fly away. However, Russell was on the porch when the house lifted so now Carl is stuck with Russell. Their adventure was beginning.
Once they reached South America, there was danger everywhere. They meet a friendly bird and talking dogs. Russell faces the wilderness he prepared for as a wilderness explorer but he soon realized the wild well, is a wild place. They also meet Carl’s childhood hero, but is he selfish and dangerous, or kind and sharing?
UP had showed us some of the most beautiful places in the South America. The Paradise Falls is one of those places. You could hear the thundering sound of the waterfall pounding in the river below. It even showed some of the forests and rivers. This movie is hilarious. It has humor about how Russell blabs on and on. Also Carl doesn't enjoy the company of Russell so he is mean to Russell verbally but Russell doesn't understand it so it makes it funny. It was also very exciting. Some parts of the movie take your breath away. There were life and death moments. One moment was to save Carl’s house from burning, or to save a very important bird from being taken away from her babies. However the soundtrack was a little unnecessary at times. When there is a slow, sad moment there is upbeat music. It made me confused at times.
UP is adventurous, gut-wrenchingly hilarious, and excitement that knocks your breath out. I recommend this for families and seeing it in 3-D is the best way to see it. The 3-D effects make the action extra exciting. It also makes the setting more realistic. My rating is 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.
