Sing a song of five-pence,
The King's pocket's full of lies,
I took four and twenty blackbirds,
And baked them in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds refused to sing.
Wasn't that an awful dish,
The queen set before the king?
They were in the counting-house,
"Counting all his money"
While I was in the parlor,
Eating bread and honey.
They were in the garden,
Taking off their clothes,
When down came a blackbird,
And ripped off her nose.
They were in the bedchamber,
Having an affair,
Then showed a blackbird,
And plucked out all their hair.
They were in the kitchen,
Hands all over thighs,
Down swooped a blackbird,
And pecked out their eyes.
They were in the dungeon,
Not being very smart,
Again appeared a blackbird,
And ate out the king's heart.
The court sent for a doctor,
Who managed not to come,
And all the land knew very well,
The king's affair was done.
