Prologue to Orb
By: ...Me.
She gasped. Her breath was hot, thick with pain. She couldn't make it stop. Her heart pounded out in harsh jagged beats, playing its own song. She ran through the forest, her hair whipping her back, cracking through the dry, ashy air. The burning tents behind her sizzled into a deep orange, being blown to nothing by the animal that was consuming it. The fire spread from the haystacks to the white tents, and now blazing the ground, bursting with heat.
Gray tears streamed down the girl's cheeks as she watched her town get devoured by the monster. She turned and kept running.
"I still need to get rid of this evil curse. It can be used for good, too," she said out loud, trying to believe herself.
She heard gunshots behind her. She made a plan in her head, calculating the survival of the guards that were drawing near. She quickly unwrapped the bottle her mother gave her before the monster engulfed her. She concentrated and let her magic drain from her body, leaving it limp and tired. She left a small bit of magic inside her. She still had one more job to do.
She heard men's voices shouting. She quickly sealed the bottle and dug a small hole next to the small cherry tree her and her father planted one year ago. This summer will be the first time it will bloom.
They were getting closer. She had to stop the fire; she couldn't leave all those people there, her family, friends- although she lost a few- all those things she'd leave behind just so they would be safe. Danger accompanied her wherever she went. She hoped the next person who got a hold of the vial wouldn’t get taken over by the power like she did.
She twisted her head around. She saw them, shouting at her telling her to stop burning their village. It wasn't her home anymore. She was too late. Even if she did try to save her town, the fire was too strong, too powerful for her to stop. She muttered apologies to the town that she vowed to protect. She only succeeded in destruction. The guards were now only 20 meters away. She still had one thing left to.
Destroy the base of the power that was killing so many people, hurting so many lives.
Get ride of the one thing that was making everyone's lives miserable.
Eliminate herself.
The last ounce of magic she had left, that essential part of her body that was the only reason she was alive right now, was going to kill her.
She pushed the magic through her chest; she felt it pulsing in her veins. She let it lose, letting it throbbed around her body in a powerful spiral. Violently and mercilessly, it seized her and then disappeared.
She gasped for air to choke out the scream that wanted to escape her chattering mouth. She felt a ripping crack that went through her body like an electric shock. She reluctantly sucked in her last breath, tasting it. Savoring it.
She then curled up into a writhing ball and her body went limp.
The breath that was so full of life was now not found in her lifeless body.
