• Chapter 68: Cain’s Pawn

Serenity sat on the floor holding the front page of the New York Times in her hand. She scanned the head story with her eyes, reviewing the picture that went with it.
‘Serenity aren’t you a bit young to be reading that,’ Mizuki said sternly listening to the words Serenity went over in her head. But yet she was surprised at Serenity’s reading ability.
“I’m five Mizuki, plus I’ve seen worse.” She shrugged her shoulders getting used to the thought. It was time she moved on from this, right? But she couldn’t fully let go.
‘Still why don’t you read something else, go get your bible and I’ll read to you.’
“Don’t you have the bible memorized by now?” She said pulling up a chair and climbing up to reach the bible at the top of the bookcase. She grabbed the fairly thick book in her hand and jumps from the chair to the floor in one easy leap.
‘As an angel, yes I do. But you can read along as I talk, I know it’s sometimes hard to follow. What do you want to hear?’
Serenity flipped through the first few pages of the book reading over the titles; Six Days of Creation and the Sabbath, Another Account of Creation, The First sin and it’s Punishment. It wasn’t until the fourth story of Genesis that something caught her eye. “This one,” she said pointing at the words, “I want to hear the story Cain Murders Able.”
    That one? Are you sure?’
Serenity put her finger to the first word ready to follow, “Yes I want to hear this one.” She listened closely to Mizuki read from memory; losing her train of thought, getting lost in the story of how one day Cain was angry at his brother Able and killed him. It wasn’t until the Lord spoke that the words lingered in her mind, ‘What have you done? Listen; your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!’
That’s when she knew, it wasn’t just the murder of Able that would be forever in her mind. And that maybe Cain had a stupid pawn used unwillingly to distract Able.
    She was that pawn.
