    Chapter 4

Hermione sat in double potions with her head resting on her hand, taking notes on everything Snape said. Every now and then she would glance at Draco sitting in the front with the new girl, Cassandra.
“Now you have thirty minutes to make anything in your potions book with a partner or by yourself,” Snape said. “It better be good.” He muttered.
Hermione gathered her ingredients, while watching Draco and Cassandra closely.

Across the room Cassandra turned to Draco. “What should we make?” Cassandra asked, flipping through her potions book.
“I don’t know, anything you want,” Draco said smiling at her.
Cassandra sighed. “You seem to be forgetting about Hermione,” she said.
“What do you mean forgetting? I keep thinking about her; it’s my entire fault she’s so miserable.” Draco replied glumly.
    Cassandra sighed. “The kiss?”
Draco sighed. “I’m confused. I like you a lot, but I love Hermione, too.”
“Something you two want to share, Draco, Cassandra?” Snape said as he observed their work, which was pretty much nothing right now. “Most of the class has started,” he added swiftly glancing at Neville who had only managed to spill the contents of his cauldron onto the floor.
    “No,” Draco muttered.
    “Cassandra?” Snape asked.
    “No, sir,” Cassandra said.
“Detention, Neville. And clean your mess up before you leave,” Snape said walking towards him.

“I hope everyone had a great first day,” Dumbledore said that night at dinner as all eyes turned to him. “I have good news for all of you. This year Hogwarts will have an autumn ball,” he paused as everyone whispered excitedly. “The first Saturday of September, so mark that on your calendars!”
Draco turned to Cassandra. “Do you want go with me to the ball?” he asked smiling.
    “Of course,” she smiled.
At the Gryffindor table Hermione sighed. Maybe if Ron hadn’t burst in on the Hogwarts Express, if no one had know about her and Draco, maybe they could still be together, maybe even go to the ball, though then people would have known about them. She thought.
Everyone was walking over to other tables to ask people to go with them to the ball. Hermione took a deep breath and walked over to the Slytherin table to ask…Kyle Mason.
    “Hey Kyle,” Hermione said smiling.
Kyle looked up. “Oh, hi Hermione,” he smiled.
“Do you want to go to the ball with me?” she asked.
“Sure, I’d love too, though I guess I was going to go with Pansy, but she left dinner early for detention,” he smirked. “Well, okay.”
“See you later,” Hermione smiled, and then walked back to the Gryffindor table.
“Did you just ask Mason to the ball Hermione?” Ron said with his mouth wide open.
“Yes, as a mater of fact, I did,” Hermione said starting to walk to the common room.
    “He’s a Slytherin!” Ron said.
“Being a Slytherin doesn’t make you bad,” Hermione scowled.
“You aren’t still thinking about Malfoy, are you?”
    Hermione said nothing.
