Ged paced up and down the courtyard, the freshly fallen snow crunching beneath his heavy boots. He had a look of worry spread across his face. As he paced he wondered what was about to happen? All he had to go on were a series of letters that he had been translating. As the King’s captain it was his job to read the letters that came into the city to see if anyone was conspiring against the king. It was a dull job mostly the only threats he ever read were practical jokes from kids who knew he’d be reading them. That was all true until the last knew moon.
Ged had been sorting the mail as usual when he happened upon a strange envelope. The envelope it self was a dark hue of red. Curious he broke the strange seal and removed the letter. The letter was written on parchment that was of equal color as the envelope. Ged stared at the letter for a long while and finally concluded it was from another country for it was written in words that were utter hogwash to Ged. Dedicated to his job Ged spent the next few weeks attempting to decipher the bizarre letter. Eventually he managed to translate three words, a date and the words Kill, and King.
Now here he was on the date that was specified in the letter waiting to find out just what would happen. Hopefully it was just another prank, but it was awfully intricate for a child’s joke. These conflicting thoughts kept flying through Ged’s mind, and the look of panic on his face was completely out of place amidst the peaceful drifting snow. He reached down into his bag and pulled out a bearskin that he wrapped over his shoulders as if a cape. As he was about to dismiss the threat of sacrilege and proceed inside he heard the snow crunch. He looked around to see where the sound came from. He drew his sword and preceded to the courtyard gate, he ducked behind some bushes and peered in to the yard.
In the courtyard standing next to the snow covered well was a man dressed all in red the same shade as the letter. He had a long red cloak with it’s hood up and a red mask stretched across his eyes. What stuck out the most however was a bright gold medallion that hung from his neck, it was in the shape of an eye and had a strange pattern encircling it. The gold reflected the red of his cloak that gave it an eerie, bloody look. After a few moments another man dressed the same arrived, then another, and another until there were twelve of them. When the last of them had showed up the man with the medallion spoke “it’s about time I’ve been waiting for quite some time”. The ma who just arrived shot him a look of hatred “shut up Oberon you ain’t been promoted yet” Oberon just stared at him calmly “I may not have the title as of now, but I could still kill right now.” The other man stared at the ground and went to the corner, he clearly feared Oberon. “now” Oberon spoke up “you all know why we’re here, I just want to tell you this is a stealth mission if you alert the guards in any way I will deal with you personally, however if that is the case the rest of you should make your way to the throne room anyway. The bottom line is the king must die.”
Ged looked on appalled at he was hearing, this Oberon was discussing death as if it meant nothing. These men would murder a king and not even bat an eyelash. He then realized it was up to him to try to stop them. He carefully pulled his crossbow off of his back and loaded a quill onto it, he then aimed at the head of Oberon. Without giving it much thought he fired. The quill shot across the courtyard and missed Oberon by inches, hitting the man next to him. The man yelled as the quill slid between his ribs and he fell to the ground spilling his blood on the freshly fallen snow. The only reaction from Oberon was a smirk “so it begins” then he turned and pointed to two of the men “you deal with our friend in the bushes, the rest of you accompany me to the throne room.” Then Oberon and most of the others proceeded into the castle.
