• I watched as they carried my little step sister off in the ambulance.
How did this happen? I thought to my self. If only I had been there, I could have stopped the whole thing. I watched as my step dad glared in my direction.
“It wasn’t my fault.” I yelled at his glare.
He continued to glare at me. “That’s not the point. You should have been there.” He raised his hand and slapped me across the face.
“What the hell? I said it wasn’t my fault. If you hadn’t fallen asleep drunk on the couch and watched her, this wouldn’t have happened.” I spit on the ground and glared back at him.
“Don’t try to push this off on me. It was your damn fault. Who said you could go out anyways?”
“I was going to school. I do that on the weekdays.” I screamed at his face.
He grabbed me by the hair and threw me into the street. “You little b*****d. Don’t lie to me! I bet you were going to see that little boyfriend of yours.”
“Alex isn’t my boyfriend. We’re just friends. And yes I was going to see him, at school you a*****e!” I yelled standing up and walking toward him.
“I said ‘Don’t lie to me!’” My step father screamed at me, grabbing my throat.
“Let me go, Joe! Now!” I struggled trying to get him to let go.
    “It’s dad to you mister.”
“You’re not my father.” I cried kicking him in the gut. I jerked away from him and stepped back but I was too slow.
He grabbed my arm and gripped it tight. “It’s your fault that my daughter is in the hospital. You’ll pay for this!”
“No! Let me go! ALEX!” I screamed trying to get away from Joe.
“I knew it.” His grip tightened. “You’re screaming for your little boyfriend.” He threw me onto the lawn of our house.
I heard a CRACK and gasped painfully. Joe had slammed something onto my leg. “OW! Oh my god!” I yelled as the police car came driving up.
One of the officers jumped out and grabbed Joe’s arm before he could hit me again. “Cut it out. Now!” The officer yelled pulling Joe up and off me.
“s**t!” The other officer had jumped out and ran to my side. “Hang on, Dylan. We’ll get you to the hospital.” The officer lifted me off the ground.
“Let me at him!” I heard Joe yell at the officer.
“Calm down sir! Sit you’ll get your turn to ride in the cop car.” The officer slapped handcuffs on Joe and slammed him to the ground.

“Dylan! Oh my god!” I heard someone say, before I large body dropped on my chest.
“Alex?” I asked opening my eyes and seeing green hair.
“Yes, Dylan, it’s me.” Alex lifted his head and smiled. “I’m so glad you’re ok. You’ve been out for about a day and a half.” He wiped tears from his eyes. “I thought I was gonna lose you, until the doctors told me it was just a fracture in your leg.”
“Oh, you worry to much.” I smiled and hugged him back. “Wait, what happened to my little sister?”
Alex looked at me and sighed. “She didn’t make it. I’m sorry. She was killed. They said she inhaled too much of the poison to save her. She died just shortly before you woke up.” Alex wiped his eyes again and looked at me.
I smiled. “It’s ok. It serves him right. He gets to lose the only thing he cared about.”
Alex looked at me. “How can you smile. You loved her too didn’t you?”
“Yes but he now gets to see what it feels like to lose something you love.” I said looking up at the ceiling.
Alex sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. “Dylan, how can you stay so calm? If I were you, I would be freaking out.” He whispered leaning his head in my direction.
‘Yes, but you’re not me.” I sat up and hugged his head to my chest. “I’ve seen how you work with you’re problems.” I grabbed his arm and pulled the sleeve up to show him the cuts all over it. “You need to grin and bare it. Stop doing this. Smile and move on. You only live once, make the most out of it.”
“I love it. You’re the one that got hurt and almost killed, but I’m the one crying.” Alex sighed and turned his face into my chest. “I’m sorry. How can you be so optimistic?” he asked looking up at me.
I smiled and kissed his lips. “It’s just the way I am. I look for the good in the world. Like, I’m perfectly fine, except for my broken leg, Joe finally gets what he deserves, and my little sister is in a better place.” I kissed him again.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” He smiled and kissed me one last time before sitting up straight.
I grabbed his arm before he could stand fully and pulled the sleeve up. “This has to stop.” I said looking at the freshly bleeding cut.
“I know, I’ll stop. I promise.” He smiled and pulled his arm from my grasp.

    **********

Three days later Dylan was discharged from the hospital and they went to his little sister’s funeral.
Another 3 months later, they graduated from High school, and moved in together.
They lived happily, until the dreadful day cam when Alex cut his wrists to deep and slowly bled to death. Dylan realized he couldn’t live with out Alex and hung himself three days later.
Their graves were placed side by side and we will forever hold them in our memories.
