Once, Toki was a happy young girl. Her parents were nice, her little brother was only a pest sometimes, and her pet cat Weesal was adorable. Everything in the world made Toki happy. That is, until her mother started having her fainting spells.
The doctors said it was nothing, just something that happens to women when they get older. Her mother would faint occasionally, but Toki and her family would be there for her. One day, Toi's dad had to go to work for an emergency and Toki was playing outside with her brother, Mikey. Suddenly they heard a loud crash in the house, and ran to see what had happened. There lay Toki's mother in a halfway fetal position, a small pool of blood around her head that was slowly growing.
"C-call the police Mike!" She screamed as she fell to her knees, grabbing her mother's cold hands.
The police soon arrived and took her to the hospital. Toki's grandmother came over, explaining to Toki and Mikey that their father was at the hospital and that their mother was going to be just fine. Toki didn't believe it, and in her heart she knew her grandmother didn't either. They spent the night playing games and Toki's grandmother even took them out to get some ice cream. But Toki's small heart grew heavy with every passing minute.
That night in her room ,Toki hugged the blanket her mother had made for her and begged the shadows to heal her mother. One answered back.
"You wish to save your mother?" the shadow asked, it's voice devoid of any emotion, as if a white wall had asked. Toki nodded, her voice unable to aid her.
"Then I will save her, but there is something you must do for me." The voice laughed lightly, then took on a more sinister tone.
"If I ever need you, no matter when, no matter what, you must do my bidding. Is this clear?"
Toki's ten year old mind needed no time to think. "Yes, I promise. Anything to save her!"
The shadow gave one last slow chuckle, then dissipated, shrinking back into her wall. Her grandmother burst into the room, trowing the switch to turn on her lights.
"Oh, Toki! It's a miracle! Your mother has woken up! The doctors can't explain it, but the wound on her head is completely healed!" Toki danced around with her grandmother, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them, watching and waiting.
A few years passed and Toki forgot about the shadow figure. Her mother's fainting spells never happened again, and the family couldn't have been happier. One night, a chill passed through Toki and she awoke with a start. The smell of smoke hit her and she coughed, falling to the floor. When she got to her door and pulled it open, she could see the house was engulfed in flames. She heard the bloodcurdling screams rom her parent's room and her brother's room. Right before she passed out, she thought she heard a chuckle above her.
When she awoke, she was laying in a field, storm clouds gathering above her head.
"So you finally woke up." An emotionless voice, so familiar to her. She jumped up.
"You! You did this!"
The shadow was now a man, an old man with black eyes and a long pointy nose, with lips curled into a smirk.
"Now, my dear. You made me a promise, and I had to get rid of anything that would keep you from me. Now, we must do something about that outfit. You can't possibly fight in that."
She was suddenly surrounded in a dark fog that blinded her, and when it was lifted she was wearing a tight fitting assassin looking outfit, multiple weapons at her fingertips, and a black headband.
"Now. Will you fight for me?" The monster asked.
Toki sighed. She had no family, no friends, and she just barely had herself. She nodded, and the old man chuckled.

Description:
it was originally going to be a story for the avvie arena, but it was too long, even condensed. so when i found the writing arena, i rewrote the whole thing, and here it is! i hope you enjoy it!
oh, and by the way, yes, it does end in a cliff hanger, sort of.
and i know it seems kind of unoriginal. but now that we have the writing arena, you'll be seeing more of me and some better work - Date: 07/20/2008
