- Its simple really. Just pick where your light source is coming from and always work from light to dark. You should also get shading tools, they really are art savers XD, and the type of paper you use also can have an effect on how the shading turns out. Don't forget to use different kinds of pencils. Charcoal smudges much darker than regular pencil, so it can be tricky to use. I would sudgest and ebony pencil to begin with. I hope that helps and Good Luck.
